Any feedbak on Mandriva 2009 Beta2?

Im running Mandriva 2009 Beta2 and have been for the past week. Its a nice distro. I just want to know what everone else thinks of it. It seems to be very compatible and versitile. I have installed XFCE, Gnome, KDE, and E17 and they all work well with the right packages. ALL of my hardware is working on my laptop, and 2 desktops. Let me know what all of you think

I have quite a few 2009 packages installed, but will wait for the official release before I

take the plunge and do a total upgrade.

I'm interested in the sata chip support for my new mobo, asus M3n78-EH.

The rest of my system is as described below...

Except a shiny new gForce 9800GT (512Mb) graphics card. (gigabyte)

It uses the chipset identifiers... MCP78, nForce 8200 and 730a, with bios version 0412 (6/6/08)

I have read the the kernel version 2.6.26.xx supports the chipset, but I wonder which version comes with your mandriva 2009 beta 2?

Hi, I buy carefully, usually the last generation of device, not the latest.

My power needs are not large, simple games, web use, printing,

and of late trying to customise the kernel to boot my new nVidia chipset, MCP78.

That takes a while.

I used to use ati cards, and I never saw the catylist control center work,

sure the icon was on the desktop, but it never worked. I think there must be a dependency or linking issue here.

Most of the changes can be made else where, check out the xorg readme, or "man xorg.conf".

There used to be one concerning radeon (ati) fglrx config. Try the driver download site, I don't remember it.

Usually the file is /etc/X11/xorg.conf

But check with your distribution, it may be different (/etc/fglrx)

ps. I think the dock jumping is part of the driver problem, maybe the resolution of the card/chip and the display mode/resizing function of flat panel displays.

One of my desktops has an nVIDIA GeForce2 MX 400 video card with 32 Mb of video memory on it.

2009.0 Betas 1 and 2 as well as RC1 all running from their respective LiveCD's, will not boot up with this card. Once X fails, I have to change the configuration so that it uses the x.org vesa driver instead. That will cause X to successfully work and eventually bring up the desktop.

Well, I have installed rc1, mini, and now I'm stuck with no filemanager (that I can Find) and no gnome or kde.

But the kernel does recognise my huawei 3g usb modem and the sata chip.

The graphics are working with the nv driver, and it recognises most of my hardware(only one listed as unknown, I don't even know what it is yet).

Other than that I have a universal problem with my graphics setup. (I think it is warranty, mobo or graphics card.)

Strange pixel actions, but the screen is usually 90% visible.

Now I have to figure out how to get kde4 up and running.

I have tested Mandriva One 2009RC1 live CD on multiple Laptops and home build PC's.
It's come up flying.
They are running a very late experimental Kernel and the NVidia Beta driver 177.**.
I tested this on 3 ~ 4 Nvidia Cards/Chipsets and the driver looks good.

Under KDE4.1, you don't need to turn on Compiz anymore.
Just use the KDE Control Panel on your Taskbar. Left hand side
Go into Desktop and tick the "turn on effects" (or something like that).
Now tick all the effect and use the 2nd TAB above it.
Tick "Wobbly Windows" and the "ALT + TAB" window switching.
It will update and ask you if you want to keep the settings...click Yes or OK.
Give it 10 seconds and move a Window.
Open multiple Windows and use ALT + TAB
For Cube, press CTRL + F11 Now left click and holt and spin the cube with the mouse.

This has worked on: 8600M GT, 7600, 7300 but not on an old IBM T42 with the ATI Mobility NV350 chip set.
The good thing was, that it kept the "effect" setting in the KDE4.1 Control Panel greyed out. So it already decided that the Chipset wasn't good enough for those effects.
And that is correct, as Compiz was shocking with that chipset and KDE3.5**
Just remember to give things a couple of seconds to take effect as it has to get data here and there from the CD.
Once up and running, it's smooth.

I got kde4.1.1 up and running, very nice and slick.

Still working on the hardware, I think the gpu is damaged, I still get ramdom flickering pixels.

Thanks for the nvnews link, very informative.

They resolved some minor issues, spreading the power-supply workload, which is all good now. "No More Flashing Pixels"

I still have the same problem with 3d graphics module setup.

I can't use the desktop effects at all, (white screen) and the kernel-rebuilds give un-intelligent errors during install.

The nvidia xxx.run package will not install.

And the coprocessor is not recognised.

But other than programs crashing (freezing or closing) when saving changes,

I think it is really good.

Hi, just a short note to let every one know that "I got my 3d graphics working".

My system, Mandriva 2009.0 rc1 kde4 (4.1.2 2009.0mdv)
WinXp in VirtualBox (non-ose)
Asus M3n78-EH AM2 motherboard,
GigaByte GV-N98TZL-512H (9800GTX+) 9800gt 512Mb ddr3,
2x 1gig kingston 800mHz DDR2, AMD64x2 5600+,
Zalman ZM750-HP 05/09/2008 (1 month to get the driver installed)

How did I do it, well, I tried every (nearly) flavour of kernel that supported my motherboard (2.6.26 and up),

X11 xorg nvidia-current packages (all of them, kernel, dkms, servers, desktops,.. )

and in the process 3 of the nvidia .run packages. 173.13, 173.08, 170.67.

today I thought after, a custom kernel roll, that I would get rid of (uninstall) x11, xorg and nvidia to begin cleanly.

so i used the search function and removed all the packages that referenced opengl, glx, x11, xorg, and nVidia.

set my oxrg.conf to use vesa, and rebooted. ( I left mesa installed)

I got to the login screen and swithch to run level 3,

The first attempt at installing 177.67 of nvidia could not install, so I ran the procedure described in the log

make oldconfig && make prepare

And for the first time in a long time it worked.

The second attempt installed almost flawlessly (curses formatting all over-writing the

previous, without blanking the screen between writes to screen)

Then I installed the bare neccessities for x

I knew I would need x11-server, xorg-server, and any deps.

Back to run level 5 and startx, and it worked.

Turned on a few fx (cube, trans...)

and it is crusing. (without compiz, beryl)

So what I thought was a bad hardware choice has paid off!

Hi again, I think I have found the problem,

my motherboard uses the 730a (MCP78) chipset and some variations of this board have an integrated graphics chip. (gf8200). Mine does not!

So when my system tells me that the chipset is an 8200, that is wrong.

So far I'm still waiting for the rest to catch up with this asus motherboard.

More experimentation in progress, (Double posted so as not to mislead as many as possible)

This time with 3d windows effects. In particular Compiz with kde4

Somewhere here I mentioned (quoted somebody else) that

compiz was no longer required with kde4.

Well it has not worked on my system,

I think what the person meant is that you can configure windows fx (compiz, compiz-fusion)

with kde4 config manager (Configure Your Desktop).

Without having to directly access the compiz ccsm.
