Unhappy Another sound problem on Mandrake 9.1 and Creative SB Live! 5.1

I realize this is not the first thread regarding this kind of problem and I did read other threads and googled around however I still wasn't able to make my machine to produce sound. I just upgraded to Mandrake 9.1 and everything is fine except that there is no sound coming out, I have Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 what do I have to do? Previously on Mandrake 9.0 everything worked just fine without any additional setting.
Here is the information I pulled out of my system, hopefully someone can figure out where is the problem many thanks in advance

alias sound-slot-1 snd-via82xx
above snd-via82xx snd-pcm-oss
above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss

couldn't find sndconfig ?

I tried to change the driver by going to Mandrake Control Center 9.1 - Hardware and selecting "Let me pick any driver" then selecting emu10k1 from previously snd-emu10k1.

After enableing all options at aRTs in Sound System - KDE Control Module this message poped out:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/audio can't be opened (No such device or address)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I also tried to configure aumix, kmix and alsamix but still no sound.

Does anyone know where is the problem ?

System specs:
Gigabyte GA-7VA
AMD Duron 800Mhz
Asus Magic 7100 GF2 MX200
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
Visipro 256Mb DDR

Thx - RaiReg

You obviously have both on-board sound (AC97) and SB Live! enabled by default. You can try disable on-board sound in the BIOS and rename the lines in green color and see what happen.

Grab the emu-tools rpm from rpmfind.net, then install and follow the incuded instructions. Especially the modification to your /etc/modules.conf file. Will give you a line that reads:-

post-install emu10k1 /usr/local/etc/emu-script

I disabeled the on-board sound (AC97) and as the result on booting sequence it said something like there is no sound device then I tried to open aumix but wouldn't start at all, could open kmix but it turned out completly empty ...

btw each time after logging in this message would pop out

Informational -artsmessage:

Sound server informational message:

Error while initializing the sound driver:

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I tried to start XMMS and it was like before, graphics moved but no suound

What to do now ?

Thx

PS. Later I reinstaled the MDK 9.1 with the on-board sound (AC97) disabeled in BIOS .... still no sound from Creative SB Live! ....

Lightbulb Case solved ....

Thank you all for the replies

Previously I forgot to mention that beside the Creative SB Live! 5.1 card I also have an on-board sound (AC7) so when I later disabeled this one in BIOS and reboot to MDK 9.1 I got all sorts of errors .... perhaps to many for a starter like me ...

So rather than trying to fix all of them one by one I decided to reinstall MDK 9.1 with on-board sound (AC7) disabeled and so after installation was done late last night, this morning I boot up the system as always then opened aumix set everything (all settings were on 0) and saved it, then went to kmix and did the same .... then started XMMS and expecting nothing to happen but this time .... I got the SOUND

since I was curious I didn't just buy it right away so I rebooted the system and with a great releave heard that startup sound before you get into the KDE desktop ....

well for a non expert I can only estimate that the problem was because both sound devices were enabled (which I didn't pay attention at 1st) so the conflict might have been there since I didn't think once to try and plug in the speakers into on-board sound device while at the same time looking for a solution for the Creative SB Live! card which was soundless all the time ....

Anyway thanks to everyones time and effort in helping me to solve this problem I really appreciate it.
