AMD64 (x86_64) and Flash
For the AMD64 (x86_64) users out there wanting Flash (Macromedia refuse to release a 64bit Flash Player), checkout http://gplflash.sourceforge.net/ to get it working with their 64bit browser.
Downloaded, compiled (./configure; make; make install) and symlinked the .so (ln -s /usr/local/lib/mozilla/plugins/libnpflash.so ~/.mozilla/plugins/libnpflash.so), and restarted Firefox. Worked perfect for me. Mandrake 10.1 (x86_64) with Firefox 64bit 1.0 :) |
flash, realplayer, mplayer-plugin, X86_64 linux/firefox
I am using fedora core 3 x86_64 on an athlon64. I tried compiling gplflash for my 64-bit firefox and it would not work; firefox would crash as soon as I loaded any flash pages. I found some posts about this and it seems like there are fixes in the CVS version of gplflash but there were bugs in the current CVS version for me, it would not compile cleanly.
I ended up switching to the 32 bit version of firefox, then just the automatic flash installer worked fine. However, I also wanted mplayerplug-in so I could watch realvideo, realaudio, quicktime, wmv, microsoft streams; it turns out if you compile mplayer for 64 bit linux it does not support the win32 codecs (necessary for a lot of quicktime/real/microsoft formats); I couldn't figure out how to compile a 32 bit mplayer on 64 bit fedora. I ended up getting mplayerplug-in working by using the dag yum package repository and doing a yum install mplayer.i386 (I used the i386 version of the dag repository instead of x86_64) and that installed 32 bit mplayer and all the 32 bit libraries it depended on, except one, libxmms. I found a random xmms rpm on the web (I already had x86_64 xmms installed but that didn't satisfy the dependency) for i386 and installed that, and it worked fine. So, I ended up with a 32 bit firefox on x86_64 fedora that can play flash and real and quicktime and just about any other streaming format fine, and a 32 bit mplayer also. It's too bad the 64 bit compile of mplayer doesn't support all of these things yet. Just thought I'd post this in hopes it might show up in google for other people searching for the same thing. |
I had fedora core 3 for three days. that was the longest three days of my life never agen. worst amd64 distro out.

Thank you very much :) |
I'm tring to ./configure this gplflash for Fedora core 3 but it return
------ checking for jpeg_destroy_decompress in -ljpeg... no configure: error: *** GPLFlash requires libjpeg. ------ but when I check the installed libjpeg it returns that both i386 and x86_64 are installed already. Probably is realy not possible to use flash in fedora for now. But the good thing is that it works for mandrake . |

hramat : But have you installed libjpeg-devel ? I bet you haven't.
"-devel" is needed if you want to compile things yourself. - Peder |
I got it installed, but your symbolic link thing isn't working. What's with the ~/?
I gave it a full path...and found flash object (so's whatever) already there. Deleated them (they obviously weren't working), and linked it with gpflash. I linked the following... /usr/local/lib/mozilla/plugins/libnpflash.so (file already existed so rm'ed) /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libnpflash.so I did whereis mozilla and even whereis firefox. Firefox just has an executable and a man file, so I guess it uses mozilla. However, it still doesn't work. |
~/ means home directory like so when the user is hramat and the link was ~/.mozilla than the full path is /home/hramat/.mozilla

The installation of the gplflash went perfectly, symlinked it, also works perfectly, i type the url: about:plugins, and it appears there too.
But all i get when i try to open a webpage that contains flash is a grey area and the browser reads (probably tries to download information) forever! What could possibly be wrong? I tried running firefox from a terminal, but i didn't really get anything out of it. (I didnt get any errors) System: Debian 3.1, w/o nVidia-drivers, flash and amaroK.
