Unhappy AMD Athlon won't shut down!

After countless years of windows I decided to give linux a go so I downloaded mandrake 10.1 CE and installed it, everything went well but
when I shut it down or reboot it just shows me these flashing white squares and stays on until I push the off button , I 've tried different things posted on this forum but nothing work, my bios does't have any sort of power management option that I can disable(I installed the latest version b4 installing mandrake), I've installed the ACPI support but it didn't work as someone suggested in this forum but nothing, I didn't have any problems shutting down or restarting with windows.

I have an AMD Athlon xp 2600 and 512 mb of memory with two 40 gb hardrives.
Please help I'm tempted to go back to windows

Have you recompiled the kernel with ACPI support? I had to do that to get my athlons to shut down.

This may or may not work for you. Give it a try. Just offering an easy way out that worked for me in past, when I had a problem shutting down system from the shutdown menu.

Open a terminal window, and simply type "halt" without the quotation marks.

That should invoke shutdown with the h flag telling the machine to power off when shutdown is complete.
