Was wondering if it's possible to install and use a different rpm/package manager (with GUI) for Mandriva2006, and if so, which one will behave the way I need it to: What I don't like about the default application is that you have separate applications for installing and uninstalling software, rather than having one mega-list of available software AND installed software, with checkmarks next to the packages which are actually installed. (I'm thinking here of the Synaptic package manager in Ubuntu)
I thought that gnome and kde had their own RPM package managers, but I can't remember what they're called or if there's a better alternative out there somewhere.
Thanks!
there is a way to use apt(the backend for synaptic) with RPM. Here's a link. I like Apt, it's most definitly the best package management tool I've used. Then you may be able to use synaptic.
You can install apt and synaptic with urpmi/Rpmdrake and then configure apt to point to the same Mandriva repos as urpmi does. Then you should be able to use Synaptic to browse the packagelist just like on Ubuntu/Debian/etc. Lets us know how it goes.

AFAIK these were only just GUI frontends to the RPM command. So you couldn't install stuff from repositories (only individual RPM files), couldn't resolve dependencies, couldn't pull updates down off the net etc. etc.
I installed APT and SYNAPTIC and it seems to work! Have added a few repositories (based on suggestions by Easy urpmi.org)...will let you know how this works out! No time to test any more this evening...
Thanks for your help!
Well, I run Ubuntu on two other boxes at home, which is how I got hooked on Synaptic in the first place...Certain issues made me want to try the latest Mandrake on this box, but oddly, now I can't remember what the heck it was! Greener grass, I suppose...
