After installing nvidia graphics card driver mandrva 2009 failed to start GUI.

hi..
I have nvidia 7300 based graphics card,i had installed Mandriva 2009 recently.
And after i installed graphics card driver and restarted my computer,Mandriva failed to start x-server but insted it switched to it's command line interface, and prompted me to login.
Any idea how to start GUI from command mode or what is wrong with the os.

Have you tried 'startx'?
Did you change graphics card? If you already had the nvidia card in the machine when you installed Mandriva, you should have gotten a working setup then. You might want to check the x configuration (the exact command escapes me at the moment).

This is the very reason I switched back to 2008.1. I installed the Power pack version with the Nvida drive already put in. After putting in all updates I couldnt get the graphic back. I even went as far as to remove all Mandriva Nvida rpms download the kernel source for my kernel and I still couldn't get graphics it kept saying the source didn't match the kernel. I made sure that they were the same version number like I've always done. After reading the forms at Mandriva with no answers I put 2008.1 back on and have been happy since. Mandriva 2009.0 is the absolute buggiest version Mandrake-Mandriva as put out since I started with version 6.5

During the installation process, the Mandriva installer should have informed you that there is a proprietary driver for your nVidia device, then asked if you want to use it.

When I installed MDV2009.0, I got this message and responded with a yes answer. My nVidia 7300 graphics card is working as expected here ...

In response to courtrrb, I am sorry you had such a bad experience with MDV2009.0. I have found it to be the most stable release to date. All my hardware worked out of the box. I am running an AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+, an nVidia GeForce 7300 GT graphics card, on a Biostar TF570 SLI mainboard. I could not be happier (sorry - not helpful).

Back to kumar3999's issue. In the past, when I had trouble with the GUI, I logged into a console screen (not a terminal window in a GUI), ran 'telinit 3' (no quotes) to shut down Xorg (if it was running), then I ran the mcc command (the Mandriva Control Center CLI app), chose the display option and followed the prompts. When mcc finished, I ran telinit 5 to start Xorg, and this usually corrected my woes. I do not know if this will be of any help to you, but it can not hurt . . .

HTH,

Of 9 machine I loaded 2009.0 on it detected the hardware on all machines.
On 1 I have 2 capture cards both detected but only the Hidef works the standard bt878 don't. On the second I had graphics until I put all the updates in. Updates are not supposed to break you system I had no graphics on a 7300 Nvidia no matter what I did. I even reloaded it twice. The third on I keep losing the panel and to log in all accounts in a shell to remove kde4 just to get it back. My laptop found the wireless but couldn't get it to work. I did what it suggested on the wiki. That work until I rebooted and had do do the same all over again. I glad your not having problem but you'll find more people having problem than those who don't. Like I said in my previous post I been using Mandrake-Mandriva since the 6.5 version and 2009.0 is the absolute buggiest I ever seen from Mandriva. Evey machine that put 2009.0 works much better with 2008.1 installed. I don't have the constant panel resets to TVtime working, to very choppy video to non existent wireless. I still have one machine running 2009.0 it's my firewall/file server. It doesn't have graphics running on it and no body uses it for anything but. Now that one is stable.

I did notice one thing ernie that supposed to be init not telinit.
I did that too 3 time it always came back with the same message it couldn't find an rpm that it needed.
I change my reporsitorys 4 time and still could find it. That's why I couldn't get the graphics to work.
They released an update to the kernel but didn't update the Nvidia driver rpms. Lucky that machine is a quadruple boot
WinXP, 2008.1 and 2009.0 both 32 & 64 bit. I try again this weekend to see If I can get the graphics to work. Hopefully they have the rpms' now.

Got my GUI back but 3D option is still not working.

hi..
Thank u all for replying.
One of my problem was solved .I got GUI mode working.
I used mcc command then after choosing the display option i saw that an option for starting Xorg(graphical mode) automatic at the time of boot was disabled. After enableing it I restarted an the GUI was back, though telinit 5 should have done(yes courtrrb it do work).

To get 3D acceleration i navigated to MCC->x server ,there i choose nvidia 7050(as no other 7 series card option was there )and i was asked if i am willing to use extra functionality offered by the card.i choose yes,i was told to logout for changes to be effective.
I loged out but it showed a blank screen in place of login screen
I used clrl+alt+F1 for console mode and used telinit 5 . I got the
login screen and after log in i got the message "the propitary driver for your graphics card can not be found the system is now using free software driver(nv)".

My graphics card is working fine with dreamlinux with it's 3D acceleration on.
