Adding a printer

Hi everyone :D

When I try to add a printer from the Mandriva Control Center, I receive an error concerning something called 'CUPS printing system'..!!

Any idea on how to solve this error ?

Regards,

First you should give us the error text. It's no surprise that it is concerning CUPS.

First, try using the CUPS interface directly. Open a browser and enter "localhost:631"

Second, please tell the exact error message, or more generally, give a complete description of what is happening.

Third, tell us what the printer is. For example, if it is HP, do you have hplip installed?

Error text: "Could not install the CUPS printing system" ...!

I'm trying to add a college printer and it is HP

Thanks all

Have you configured online sources?

Doll Face;

Please clarify exactly what you are doing when you get various error messages. For example, to install CUPS, you would use the package manager.

BUT: I have trouble believing that Mandriva would not install CUPS by default. Did you try "localhost:631"?

From post #3:
What specific model of printer?
Is HPLIP installed?

Not an issue if you use the CUPS browser interface, n'est-ce pas?

Cups is NOT included in the Mandriva KDE live CD's. The cups packages and printer drivers are among the "needed packages" that are installed along with system-config-printer.

oops--my mistake.

I like Arch where nothing gets installed---that way you never assume that anything is there....

Doll Face: We've got it---Install CUPS!!!.....;)

I want to install HP Deskjet D2663

Am trying to install HPLIP first through the terminal, but there is an error: "There are 10 missing required dependencies" .. !

It says that I have to install those dependencies manually and then re-run the installer..

I tried to debug this error but nothing worked ... What to do?!

knudfl 05-12-2010 11:32 AM

In Linux you do not download system packages for install.
Automatic "package mechanisms" take care of that.
Terminal : The commands are ...
1) su
2) urpmi.update -a
3) urpmi cups cups-common hplip hplip-hpijs hplip-hpijs-ppds

..

I followed ur 3 steps command, but still am getting the same error!

I have an HP All-in-One printer here, and when I connected it's USB cable to my computer, Mandriva detected it and installed all requires software for me. I then went searching the Mandriva Hardware Compatibility list, and was directed to the database at the LinuxPrinting WEB site where I looked up your printer (HP Deskjet D2663), and did not find it listed. One thing you can try (no promises) is to install the hplip package using the Mandriva package manager (the package manager will install the needed dependencies too) and see if that gets the printer working. If that fails, then your printer may not be supported in Linux yet.
