A7V8X + ATI 9800 Pro and Mandrake9.2
 
I am a newbie
I can't seem to get 3d hardware acceleration to turn on.
I did dwnld the kernel-source as well as the latest driver from ATI but the config can't seem to init the agp port.

My system is:
Motherboard:Asus A7V8X
Ram: 1 gig PC2700
HD Drive:Maxtor 80 gig udma 133
VideoCard:ATI 9800 Pro 128 meg
SoundCard:SoundBlaster Audigy2 Platinum Ex

Everything else works but the 3d hardware accelleration.
It is running the Mesa drivers according to fglrxinfo.

check the file /var/log/XFree86.0.log

scroll about 3/4 of the way down, and see if you have any errors related to agp or fglrx.

also post the output of - dmesg | grep agpgart & dmesg | grep fglrx

ok, you need to try adding the following to your /etc/rc.local file

/sbin/modprobe agpgart agp_try_unsupported=1
/sbin/modprobe fglrx

add those, reboot and see if you have 3d acell, if not... run telinit 3, as root to go to command line, then run

modprobe fglrx

then run

telinit 5 (to get abck into the GUI)

you should now have 3d accell...


but, you will have to modprobe fglrx from the CL everytime you reboot, to get accell... I have the same problem with my setup usuing an P4X400 board.

good luck... Post back up if you have any problems.. I have been through all of them so far regarding Radeon drivers.

Hi, I'm back again.
I am still having problems getting this card to work with Mandrake 9.2.
The card is being recognized under Linux but when I run glxgears I get about 340 fps although everthing is turned on.
The ATI pannel has all of the correct settings listed except Display Driver which is blank.
Any ideas ?

fglrxinfo

does it still show mesa drivers? if so,

open terminal,

su
password
telinit 3 (it will take you to command line)
login as you
su
password
modprobe fglrx
(if no errors are givin.... do the following)
exit (to log out of su)
startx
open terminal, run fglrxinfo (is it still mesa or now ATI?)

if errors are given on modprobe fglrx... post em up.

In answer to your question it shows ATI drivers with 3D Now technology.
However, I am still getting only 340 fps in GLXGears.
When I log out of the X session there is an error message.
Error Message:

(ww) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found

In non-gui mode as su I typed in modprobe fglrx and pressed return it went to the next line with no output.

I then typed in modprobe agpgart and got the following output

I think that I sould be getting a lot more fps with glxgears than 340 after all my card is an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AGP 8x card. The highest fps I was able to achieve was about 1400 fps.

I got it fixed finally. My problem was during the install of madrake 9.2 I was not able to get the fglrx driver to work so I chose the development driver (fbdev) and that was causing the problems. I went into the configuration for hardware and chose the Xserver configurer and selected the fglrx driver under devices, then I saved it and went and rebooted without
going into an X session and re-ran fglrxconfig in non gui mode. Once this was done I again rebooted the system, once it had rebooted I started an X session and ran glxgears
I get about 4400 fps and after about 12 to 15 minutes it goes up to about 7400.
I did modify the file /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/agpgart_be.c
I had to modify the via line that is below the 8377 chip identifier it says via_generic_setup}, // AGP 2
I modified it to read as follows
via_kt400_setup}, // AGP 2.

What does putting the " # " before the line
BusID "PCI:1:0:0" # vendor=1002, device=4e48
do, is it a comment character of some sort?

yes i believe it is a comment... it removes the line from being executed basically, glad you got it working :)
