_FontTranOpen: unable to parse....


I hope someone can please recognize what has gone wrong here.
I recently have problems starting X. I can only log into a black/text screen.

I had tried using mandrake update to install a few files and probably installed a few KDE-devel type files that I seemed to need.
I am using mandrake 9.1 on an Athlon system.

the error messages I get are of the type

_FontTranOpen: unable to parse address usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/
could not init font path element usr/X11/lib/fonts/75dpi/ removing from list!

This message apears for several fonts and the I get a message about something in the XFree-log which I have attached.


What have I done to a perfectly working system to mess it up so?
I even had back-up XF86Config-4 and XF86Config files, which do not get things running properly, so I assume the problem is elsewhere.

Googling "_fonttranopen" gives me no results.

Please help!

After editing XF86Config-4 several times with no luck I decided to try inserting the mandrake 9.1 CD and use the upgrade option (Not a complete install).

I was very afraid I would loose some of my settings or software or tweaks I had installed over the years.

Everything now seems to be working well. I still have no idea hat happened but am still curious.
