9.2 setup Sharing with WinXP on Domain

OK, I have httd active for webserver, and I have installed Samba and went through the setup to share files. I can see my Drak server now on the network but I cannot log into to it or see the shared folder. I use the same user/password as the local login and it does not work.

In the Samba setup it asked for "workgroup", I am on a Domain. Is that a difference? But I see the Drak Server lister under the Domain.

Also tryint to get a VNC connection to it. What is the Server side steps to initialize VNC to wait for a connection then how do I point to it with my TightVNC on winXP? Do I use ipaddress:x or what?

Thanks.

Oh so many questions.

I am not able to help you with the SAMBA setup, I am struggling through that as well. However, I have got vnc to work.

In a console type 'vncserver',
it will prompt you for a password,
enter & confirm that & you are all set.

There are many options you can set with vncserver such as display #, (the default is 1) There is documentation here.

http://www.tightvnc.com/docs.html
also here
http://www.realvnc.com/documentation.html

As for connecting from the xp client, when you start the vnc viewer & it asks for the vnc server, enter ipaddress:display. You can use the host name if you have DNS or host files setup in your network. One other thing I have found, whoever you start vncserver as is who you are logged in as when you connect with vnc viewer.

Hope this helps.

Are you using this for home/personal use or office/work use? If you using it for home use than why do you need to set up to login into your file server. My file server is accessible from three different WinXp machines All can write to it and copy from it.

It is a home office and I would like to have the possibility to have an FTP location to put or get files. If I can have the server secure for FTP/web services I would not mind it with no restrictions for local network. I will try to run through setup to allow all access to test other settings.
