9.2 rocks but...
 

I've been using mdk since version 6 and I must say that I am very pleased with 9.2.
It works great on my compaq presario 2700 notebook.

I have an external hd and an external dvd writer plugged on firewire interface, they both work without any config. dvd playback is great, k3b burns clean cd/dvd.

my fuji digital camera mounts and unmounts well (that required a bit config though).

ok, everything works just the same as under M$ but after trying all mdk kernel sources available, I still cant get that damn thing to compile. errors pop up sooner or later (usually in "make modules"...). kernel source seems to be full of bugs!!!

has anyone been actually able to fully compile kernel and modules???
I tried latest updates (incl. 22-21), doesnt work...)

the first time I tried, it crapped out when it was compiling usb modules. I reinstalled the sources, and this time it hasn't broken down yet. Though it's taking an incredible amount of time -- it puzzles me a bit. I'll get back when and if I'm done.

i got that usb problem at some time too.
so i disabled usb modules and stuff, now it compiles fine but my usb mouse doesnt work...

I got it compiled - kernel and modules - I'm using it for my 9.1. I lost sound .... but I'll figure that out ... I hope ... I actually did leave all the default usb settings this time and it worked - the first time I made some changes to usb modules (tried to get rid of modules for devices that I don't have) and it promptly crapped out.

The only reason I wanted the 2.4.22 is because it manages to reboot my computer.

ok, first time i managed to compile it without any errors.

USB doesnt work anymore (cos i had to disable it for compile not to crash) and when booting, after saying "mounting local filesystems", it says "too many filesystems or bad block...". after booting into gui, it works fine though. mount points to other drives are ok.

no other problems so far...

I'm one of those chickens who aren't upgrading yet. I just got the 9.2 kernel sources and compiled it to have it with my 9.1. Seems to work fine except for alsa. 9.1 uses 0.9.0rc8, and 9.2 is alsa0.9.6 so I guess there are compatibility issues which I am sure can be solved by doing some reading - I'm too lazy for that so for the moment I'll go back to oss which works fine. Insofar as the main benefit of 9.2 seems to be the kernel - for me at least - it might be worth giving it a shot for all those who don't want to do a full upgrade to 9.2.

edit: part of the sound problem was I had forgotten to compile the alsa sound module for my sound card. Stupid :D I compiled it as a module and updated the alsa packages using the rpms on the 9.2 CDs (no big dependencies; locale files for some reason and gcc had to be updated) and now things work fine. A mix of 9.1 and 9.2. It could be that an update of the alsa packages wasn't necessary but it didn't hurt.
