I have activated the 3D desktop in Mandriva, but don't know how to start it. My desktops (all four of them) are still the normal 2D. Is there some sort of keyboard shortcut that switches to 3D view?
I don't know if you have or not, it wasn't clear from your post, but after enabling 3D effects from drakconfig and using aiglx or xgl, you must restart xserver.
Yes, I did fully restart the computer. From your answer, I'd guess it should start automatically when loading the desktop, and there is no shortcut key to get the 'cube' up i have seen in screenshots?
You probably need to change the session you log into (I suspect you'll be using KDE or gnome at the moment). To do this, log out, and then where you log in, there should be a button/menu/something called session (or something along those lines). Change your session from your current one (Gnome/KDE) to Beryl or XGL (assuming you have used Beryl), then log in as usual. You should then have the cube you're looking for
if you are in your window manger and have the compiz effects going, drop shadows, wiggly windows, etc; and just don't see the cube, the default shortcut keys in 2007 are Ctrl + Alt. By using these keys while dragging on the desktop you can move around the cube, by using the left/right arrow keys you can navigate to different sides of the cube, and by using the down arrow key you can "unfold" the cube and navigate using the left/right keys. You can further edit the compiz configuration, effects, shortcuts... with gset-compiz.
Thanks guys. I tried to install the Beryl packages, but nothing changed until i opened a console and ran 'beryl'. The desktop suddenly jumped in to 3D mode and the shortcut keys started to do something. It doesn't start on boot, but i've got a shortcut on the desktop to initiate 3D mode whenver i may need multiple desktops.
