2010 update refuses password

Hi all,
From me, a newbie. My resident computer geek/nephew guided me through the update from one 2009 spring to the 2010. Now I'm not able to login because my password is not accepted. We tried changing login/user name and password to no avail. Reinstalled, same problem. Anybody have a solution?
Thanks in advance for the help.
D

Hi, I'm referring to Mandriva One 2009 Spring, that last iteration of the Mandriva distro prior to the 2010 distro.
Thanks, D

Changing passwords is a job for root. Do you know the root password? It's not clear what steps you've taken, so, one generic strategy is to choose Failsafe at the boot menu. IIRC, this will put you in console with a root prompt, already. A good way to change the root password, btw.

Anyway as root, do:

passwd username

and press Enter, where username is the actual login you use. Presumably, during install you created a user and this is the user login to use. Type the password you want. Press Enter.

You might be warned of a weak password and you can ignore this, if you want. You are prompted to re-type the password, so do so and press Enter.

If this strategy is not something that has already failed and works for you, remember the password. Type:

init 5

and press Enter to load the desktop, hopefully with a login screen you can now use.
