2005 giving me some problems
I installed 2005 a few days ago and there are several problems I'm having:
1. Every time I boot it says: nvidia 7174 installing module bad exit: 5 installation failed But x and kde still start up(although it takes a little while at the nvidia splash screen), anyone know what it's trying to do and how to fix it? 2. in ut2004 whenever it's "querying master server" it hangs for maybe 10 seconds and then loads the list. And internet is much slower than before(not bandwidth, but connecting) Firefox is "looking up host" for probably 10s too. I'm using a BFG 6800 OC video card. I'm using roadrunner cable, with a cable modem connection to my ethernet card. Hope someone can help me with these problems, and also help mandriva correct these. |
I get the same thing just with a much older, and more crappy geforce 4 mx 4000.

I installed today and am getting the same nvidia message and slow connection. Also bittornado won't work (I know it's not most popular but for me it's clean and simple and it works - usually).

slow internet may be due to ipv6 being enabled. I had this problem, see this thread
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=305540 sorry, dunno about the other stuff |

also in xorg.conf if you use the default glx libraries ("Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so"") instead of "Load "glx" games are very choppy. |
Still haven't figured it out :(

To make it clear, I get the dkms error at startup, however I still get the nvidia splash at startup, and Army Ops, and Enimy Territory run like a dream. I don't even need to oc the card in linux I get max graphics right off the bat, in windoze I need to oc the gpu by 100mhz to get the same level of performance.
Also imho this issue is due to dkms trying to install a dkm when the km is allready installed, therefore it gets an error, and has to exit the instaliation. |

I have the sane prob with my ATI driver, and madwifi. I think they're already installed, but it's trying to install them again.
If I find the fix, I'll post it here (will try tonight). UPDATE: I confirmed my video card and wifi are running fine (software already installed), so I disabled DKMS using webmin|system|boot up and shut down. Not elegant, but works for now. Anybody got a more elegant solution? |
worked for me
Had something simliar, upon installation, X wouldn't start. After copying off xorg.conf :D , I edited xorg.conf and changed the video to the generic nvidea driver ("nv") , :wq ,and logged out and back in and X was happy.

nvidia and x
I had the same problem with X and my Nvidia GeForce4 MX440se, I got around it by uninstalling the nvidia driver, and then installing it again. After doing so I just added the line nvidia to /etc/modprobe.preload. And now all my Nvidia issues are solved. My X wouldn't start before, it just boot and then the login would be text, shell like. I then remembered that from another forum cause I had the same issue with 10.1, and I did it now when i boot up the KDM starts up fine after the logo. Another think to look at is disable dri in your xorg, and that there is only one glx extension. You might see
this: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so thats the norm module, but the one you need is libglx.so.1.0.7174. So what I did was to move libglx.so to libglx.xorgso and the moved libglx.so.1.0.7174 to libglx.so. I tested it after and it boot propertly and then tried a glx screensavers, the fireworks one and boom 100% success. I am running Mandriva 2005 on a pII 350mhz 320ram 64mb vidcard 30gb hdd, and i installed the system custom using a mandrake 10.1 mini-install cd. Lol I love mandrake though. Here this might help you: Section "Module" # This loads the DBE extension module. Load "dbe" # Double buffer extension # This loads the font modules Load "type1" Load "speedo" Load "freetype" Load "glx" # This loads the DRI module # Load "dri" # Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so" # This loads the miscellaneous extensions module, and disables # initialisation of the XFree86-DGA extension within that module. Subsection "extmod" Option "omit xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA extension EndSubsection EndSection this is my nvidia card setting: Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "nVidia Corp." BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce4 (generic)" Driver "nvidia" Option "DPMS" Option "IgnoreEDID" "1" EndSection Note the line Option "IgnoreEDID" "1" was added by xorg or the installer. After running the mini-install for 10.1 I just urpmi, and installed what i wanted from 2005, after I had to run xorg.config. Note I had the nvidia drivers installed before I ran xorgconfig. Tools: mini-install CD, lynx browser, and urpmi. |
dkms error ati radeon 9250 mandriva 2005
Same dkms problem with an ATI radeon 9250
during boot up with mandrake 10.2 after upgrade I used to have 10.1 absolutely fine. Worse even the glxgears score has been devided by 4 after the upgrade and cannot figure out what has changed in Xorg.conf (I had tweaked xorg.conf in 10.1 to get the best performance I could so I had the dri activated etc) Will report when I can with more info. I did locate libglx and found there were 2 or 3? libglx on the system with various names and paths Will see if webterractive mail can help me |
Spring Cleaning
First of all Emannuel_uk you shouldn't have more than 1 libglx.so by default. If you upgraded to 2005 from 10.1 you need to uninstall all the drivers for your vidcard. Secondly if you're using 10.2/2005 you need to upgrade to the newer kernel, I couldn't even get passed alsa with old kernel(2.6.8.1-24mdk). Mandriva will automatically load the glx module. Note that the glx module is native to the "nv" driver but will function for the the new drivers which are "nvidia". So if you use normal glx, it will load it for nv. But all you need to change is the nv to nvidia when you finish installing the drivers. Leave the glx alone. Glx layer works fine, the only thing is that the nv driver doesn't accelerate you card, only allows it to function. Nvidia drivers do accelerate your card thus making it work better. If you something pointing to /usr/X11R6/ and then to the libglx.so just comment it by adding # in front of the line. After installing the drivers make sure you just have Load "glx" and then then "nvidia" under driver.
1. Clean up your installation 2. Re-install your Driver 3. Change only what you need to change in xorg 4.Install newer kernel 2.6.11 5.To make things work better just add nvidia to your /etc/modprobe.preload You might want to install the kernel first before you do the rest. |
dkms error video driver (solved)
another way to do it
dkms error: solved by editing dkms.conf somewhere in /usr/srce/.../ATI3.1.1/ In this file replace Autoinstall=yes by Autoinstall=no One could delete the file as well I suppose Best way to find the file was locate dkms.conf webterractive, thanks a lot for your post. I need to to update the signature, although the distribution list on the right is up to date. I have a "quad-boot", so the kernel I use is indeed 2.6.8.11 It is a shame I read your email only this morning (my fault). I spend hours figuring out yesterday what was wrong (then used diff to go faster, and then I installed 10.2 on a different partition to compare 10.1 upgraded to 10.2) My newbee experience: - in xorg.conf in 10.1 I have the kbd keyboard driver instead of keyboard (That seemed to make a big difference, because once I corrected that, lsmod listed radeon as a loaded module while before it did not. It must have used fglrx in a strange way; drakx11 was unable to change the video driver) - took ages to find a similar conclusion about libGL as the one you mention about libglx In fact I have more than one version of libGL and it screws up the driver loading, whereas 10.2 on its own has no libGL installed that I could tell about - in xorg.conf Load "glx" I need to reenable that.: it was there before the upgrade, or I might have disabled it because it did not matter in 10.1: with the driver I had I could not see any improvement. As you suggest will dig how many libglx I have [edit: I have only one libglx file on the HD, so it is great] I have gone from 205 FPS to 700 FPS now with glxgears, but there are still some errors in xorg.0.log [edit solved by changing in xorg.conf (worked ok in 10.1) load "/ / /libglx.a" to load "glx" Overall in the upgrade process I have moved from the fglrx video proprietary driver to the open (I believe) radeon driver Will report later [edit libGL 2 versions in /usr/lib and 3 versions in usr/X11R6/lib, I changed the symlinks, found out that the X11R6 lib is being used, libGL 1.2 in fact. Changed the link to libGL.so.1.4.x.x.x which is in the directory, glxgears was then slower] webterractive: What is the relevance of glx being native to nv driver? I am a bit ignorant on this. I assumed it was quite generic and would work with my ATI, so I read http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/OpenGL Do you really suggest I put the nvidia driver in the preload section, when I have an ATI card? Is this going to work? [edit: My system has always been loading nv-agpgart, is this what you had in mind] |
