10.1 Community to 10.1 Official - upgrade or clean install?
 

I am running 10.1 Commuity and would like to install 10.1 Offical (as soon as the download is complete). Should I do an upgrade or a clean install? I have a dual-boot set up with XP, if I do a clean install on the Linux partitions, will it mess up my boot record and affect XP?

I always do a clean install when upgrading mandrake versions. If you choose to do so, you only need to backup data, you don't need to worry about packages.

If you clean the linux partitions, you will not have a problem with your separate XP partitions :)

I couldn't get 10.1 to work till I did a clean install. Now I'm using it.

I've used Mandrake versions 8.0, 8.2, 9.0, 9.1, and 9.2. Could not get 10.0 to work right. Now 10.1 works about as well as 9.2, which was the best for me.

In my experience it is safer to do a clean install rather than an upgrade in a variety of situations which include updating from a developmental version to a final release, updating more than one version number (e.g. from version 9.2 to 10.1 rather than from 10.0 to 10.1), and when the newer release contains significant changes.

Take note that Mandrakelinux 10.1 (Community) is a developmental release which is similar in intent to a final beta. Mandrake releases a '(Community)' version to the Linux community for broad based bug hunting with the intent of producing a more stable, better working '(Official)' release.

In this post, you are updating from a developmental release to an official, so I strongly recommend you do a clean install.

I don't think my questions has been answered fully. Ok, if I do a clean install, it will overwrite MDK 10.1 Community stuff on my hard drive. What will happen to LILO boot record? Will the installation wizard recognize that I have dual-boot setup? I am concerned that if I do a clean install it will screw up the exisiting boot record managing XP and MDK.

No, it will just ask you to configure the bootloader again--just the same as when you installed community :) No worries
