10.0 : problem playing audio CDs

Hi,
on my SONY laptop VAIO PCG GRV616S
I can play audio CDs in windows and in mandrake 9.2

in 10.0 RC1 + cooker updates:
totem simply says it can't play an audio CD
kscd/xmms play but no sound comes out (and sound does work, with either OSS or ALSA, as I can happily rip a CD and play MP3s or OGGs).

I have done extensive web searches and suggestion of a missing cable from the CD to the sound card do not seem appropriate, as everything worked fine in Mdk 9.2.

Now, I found that in XMMS (and only there) I can twaek the settings so that instead of playing 'digital', analog audio can be extracted from the CD player. with that chosen, CDs do play (in XMMS *only*) but with IMO not a good quality and with some noise when the cpu is busy doing stuff (I listen while I work, eg. compile build and run software!).

any hints ?

tia,
Edo

That actually seems to be the problem. Windows XP and Mandrake 9.1 both 'just worked' without the cable on my sb live! card. Windows 98 and mandrake 10 seem to need the cable, so that means the digital connection is not being used IMO. I'm sure its a bug and will be fixed. It was nice to see that cable just dangling there (but, sadly, I had to plug it in as I have both the dratted things on my machine right now - 98 for the old games I like - and less disk space for that scab of an OS - and MDK10 because its the absolute best OS I've seen this year)

Actually its better for your prossessor if you use the cable. Since then your not using the prossessor for extracting the audio and it can do its real job of computing inportant things.

Unhappy But what about the message reported by Totem?

"Totem couldn't reproduce this media (Audio CD) despite to exists a plugin to support it.
You may want to check if there exists a Music CD in the unity and if it is correctely configured..."
This is the messageI receive when I try to listen a music CD with Totem. I would like to inform that with Mandrake9.2.1 it was working fine. I guess it is a problem with xine and not with Totem itself. I have a cable to play analog Sound. I can hear the lyrics with KsCD, Grip e XMMS. I can't reprocuce music CD with Xine, Audacity and Noatum. May someone help me?
I would like to thanks in advance. Antonio Carlos

I run mdk10.0(community), and I have the same problem about playing audio cd as nogueira has. I also think about this as a issue of xine.

Its as if the developers of these projects have not really concentrated on hooking to the 2.6 kernel. They will. Give it a few months.

I do not know how to help here, I am listening to a Yes CD as I write this using Kscd. If you are using KDE as your desktop, open Kmix, click the input tab, make sure the CD level is set high enough to hear.
HTH,
