[2008.1] Shutdown/restart buttons missing in KDE and black screen after logout
When I go to Menu -> Log out... I only get the option to end my session, where I used to get the options of shutting down and restarting my computer. I have no idea why they vanished or when exactly. Does anyone know how I can get them back?
My second problem is that when I do select the option to end my session, my computer drops into a black screen with a frozen cursor in the top left corner. I cannot type and it does not return to the login screen. When I press Ctrl+Alt+Del, Mandriva starts to shut itself down. When I press Esc during that shutdown to enter verbose mode, the entire area where the textual output should be visible is black. You can still see the edges of the grey background, but the entire space is filled with black, so you cannot read anything (if there is anything to read). If anyone knows why this happens or how I can fix it, I'd be very glad to hear it.
If you're using KDE, it sounds like a configuration issue with xdm (X Display Manager). I rarely use KDE, so I'm not exactly sure how it integrates xdm into init, but this should hopefully give you a place to start looking.

Thanks for your replies. I have had to reinstall KDE and now my buttons are back, but if they disappear again, I will be sure to follow your advice.
As to the black screen after trying to log out, it turns out that if I wait a while, I get some error messages that say that X Server (I think) could not be started and that it is most likely misconfigured. I am given the option to configure it, but I have no idea how I should go about that. Also, I find it strange that it works fine when I boot up Mandriva, but when I try to log out, the configuration is suddenly awry. Does anyone know more about this?
