$HOME/.dir_colors ignored??

Hi all!
I would like to unalias the color settings for 'ls'. From browsing my system files, it seems /etc/DIR_COLORS is causing these colors to be added. In this file it says I can copy this to $HOME/.dir_colors, set 'COLORS' to "none", and the colors are turned off. I've done that, logged-out and in, and the colors remain. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?? $HOME/.dir_colors has read permissions for all....
Oh this is on MDK Powerpack 10.0 Official.....
Thanks!

I guess ~/.bashrc would be better for using
local alias commands for the $BASH prompt........

Thanks. I could remove my $HOME/.bashrc and replace it with /etc/bashrc, but I'd like to keep my user account as similar to everyone else's as possible. According to the documentation, I should be able to do what I want by simply copying the dir_colors file. Unless there's a bug in the documentation or code...:(
