Trying to get Mageia 4 up and running.

Around when 4 came out I installed it and I could not get it to boot with it installed with the bsfr (is it) files system. It had issues with ext3 I believe so reinstalled it with it's preferred file system. I had not noticed then but grub 1 states at the manual boot screen that it would not recognize it but I suspected it was a problem with grub 1 so I recently made a superGrub boot up disc.

Now I can get it to boot but X won't start it's self and I can't start it manually.

The error messages are along the line of ;

-serverauth.3129 does not exist
-Xauthority does not exist
-Xinit VIO resource temporarily unavailable on X server.

Your expertise is appreciated!

for some reason, v 4.0 had problems with the installation
download and try 4.1
if it throws up errors just wait a few minutes to see if it can fix itself

Thanks for the reply

I heard that installing it from a thumb drive worked perfectly. Is there any truth to that?

I got the junker up and running

Here's a post I did first on Mageia 4 issues. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ot-4175496922/

Well I reinstalled 4 with the ext3 file system and it would only boot with grub legacy if you use the root=/dev/sda or whatever drive command like fedora required with grub legacy. I tried the superGrub boot up disc but I really don't know how to use it.
Edit: Oh ya , I could not make a bootable usb drive from mageia 4 because I got check sum errors.
X server starts and the only errors on bootup are powersupply settings so I guess I'll stick with it.

I used Fedora's live-use creator. I made a ISO file with baraso and formated the drive to fat 32. Is there anything else?

Another thing you should do is read all threads on problems using tools to put an image on usb sticks. You will have a lot of trouble finding one where the dd command didn't work correctly.

You may find that people didn't use it correctly but it works.

Why people struggle to hunt up and use other methods is beyond me.

New Usb drive attempt

Okay I used dd to copy the mageia install Cd but it ended up being in the hidden NTSF. My gui won't mount it but fdisk finds it and it does mount manually. I'd rather not reboot my computer to see if it is bootable. Is the NTSF file system the way to go?

Edit: On maybe why the dd command is not used. I had to hunt to get info on how to do it from maybe 3 different forums and could not find a decent guide or tutorial on it. The BS option is beyond vague.

Your system can handle ntfs fine. Live media includes that because most systems are running ntfs. It also should have listed hfs (or something similar can't remember the exact file system designation) which is used by OSx.

Your bios should recognize the ntfs and boot from it.

thumb drive works

I have to go into the past for a minute. The install I did that was bootable and X worked went south like half of the mandrake forks do so I installed it from a thumb drive. This is the first 5 minutes I have used it so I will keep my fingers crossed but it is working. The dd command needed where the iso file is and where you want to put it and also a BS option which I used 1G whiched worked fine. It was easy. From this mageia 4 install forward I'm only going to use gui for simple and common task because gui is to clumsy and problem-matic in my opinion. Mcc is a bug infested wrapper so its Urpmi for now on.

Other notes:

-I left the mageia install cd in while I was trying to install it from the usb and the install was using the cd to download packackages even though I booted from the usb. WTF?

-I let the installer install grub 2 normally so I'm not manually booting or using grub legacy. It is using grub2 I assume.

-Core updates wrecked the install that would boot and x would also work. It took the libraries out that kde needed to the best of my knowledge. Why are mandrake forks fire or ice???

-I have a great working Mageia 1 install that I'm going to update the browsers on in case mageia 4 goes to hell again. Mageia one works perfectly with the last version of gnome 2 but had huge problems with xfce to the point it would only boot in the terminal for reference.

-If this install is a joke I'm going back to fedora.

Thanks for the help!
