I am quite excited too.

Not going to put on a party for this event though.

Just don't think it is worth the bother.

I do live in a town. It is the County Seat (center for County government for those not in the US).

It also has a population of about 500 people and there are, being generous with the number, 6 Linux users. This is rural ranch country and a lot of folks don't even have a computer at all because they have no use for one. The rest us MS because it came on their computer and are not going to change.

My wife and I (2 of the 6 Linux users) will probably have a quiet beer. We may get really wild and have 2 or 3.

Putting on a publicized party would simply be putting a large label on us as being some sort of cult members.

My quiet approach has gathered 3 of the other 4 Linux users. As usage is at about 1% I would say we are doing pretty good in comparison to world wide numbers.

Say what you like about Android it has been a great help in getting people to try a real Linux distro.

No one seems to actually know it is Linux based. Or that our local telephone/ISP co operative uses Linux servers.

While not open to "pep rally" tactics the folks around here, if you can get them to use Linux at all, will not be likely to use anything else. They know a good thing if you can get them to look at it.

Quietly recovering data from a buggered MS install with my external drive usually does the trick. They say "What the hell is that? Never seen such a thing." I tell them. They like a good tool.

Sounds very sensible, Widget :D Even in an enormous city like Chicago, Linux users are low-key and quiet about it. Not much into computer evangelism.

There are, however, some good works being done by volunteer projects such as Freegeek. I hope to touch base with them and turn them on to the binary goodness. :) cheers
