Zero Reply Thread link anomolies
 

Is the following supposed to be happening???



When I "click" with my lynx browser on the link that says "0 Reply Threads" it goes right to the section with the 1063 pages and 37193 unanswered posts.




But if I click the other link, "LQ 0 Reply ...", I get a message that my browser needs to download an xml file.




uhm...

what the firetruck?!

I of course click "cancel" because it's trying to create a directory as well before it downloads.

Your clicking on the RSS feed link on the second mentioning.. :rolleyes:

I think the XML file link you clicked is a RSS feed for members who choose to receive a notification of all zero replies.

Why does it want me to download an xml application for one link but not the other?

Why will the "normal" link show me the pages without downloading any xml application but the "LQ 0 Reply Thread" link won't?

Its for an RSS feed.. like explained above.. its not meant to be viewable in a regular browser window.. one is for viewing in a browser.. the other is to use as an RSS FEED! DO you READ the WORDS typed on my SCREEN! :D

Well, it's not called RSS FEED, it's the link that shows up on the page when the regular 0 Reply Thread link isn't there and it only happens when I use lynx. Oh, all of the links at the top that say "LQ ..." do the same thing. Sometimes with lynx I see the xml code itself.

As for your previous post... I didn't read any of them when I posted the second time. I was running straight console for a few days using Debian 3.1. Now I'm back on something that's running the X-Windows System and Debian 3.0r2.


I feel for people running console browsers. What a mess the news on the front makes when you want the links that would normally be on the side.

I'd have to say 99% of sites are not meant to be viewed in a console/CLI type browser.. something you have to deal with when using. I don't like the fact that my firefox won't render crap IE developed pages.. but oh well, I deal with it.

This is true, but this is LQ.org and not some lame IE-format website. I just thought that maybe this site could make the format more console-friendly because of the typical audience that comes here. You know... don't force a console person to have a GUI box if they don't have to, etc. Lot's of people who run FreeBSD and other BSD based OSes don't run the X-Windows System by default because of that old stigma that "X" is a "security risk". If they can get in as I say.... it matters not whether you are console or X. Hacked is hacked. Or cracked is cracked.

I've never been able to make the connection that people who are innovative thinkers are "hackers" and people who trash other peoples computers are "Crackers". The "hackers" term means everyone on earth is a hacker then because everyone at one time in their life has thought their way through something by thinking "outside of the box". And then "script kiddies" aren't that much nicer since many people run scripts and are children.

When I was coming up from the punch card/ticket tape "computers" and watching my uncle work with "tube computers", the term :hacker" didn't exist. When people started breaking into computers the term hacker came to light if I remember correctly. Then some people that liked that term said it meant something else because they couldn't think of a better elite term to describe "original thinking" with one word like "innovative" does. Maybe it's because it's three syllables and hacker is two. Anyway, I still think a hacker is the bad person because cracker is some slang to describe someone from the Southern portion of the USA and not very nice either.

Of course back in those days, when you heard someone say the word sound maul, it was something that animals did to other people and animals or was the counterpart to the axe. But that's another story entirely.... :D

You drift off topic really easily. I think over 2/3's of your reply there had nothing to do with the actual topic.. you lost me on talking about hackers and sound mauls.. :rolleyes:

I regularly check LQ in lynx and ensure that the forum remains usable in text browsers. The layout is not something that is very nice of course, but the usability is there (and the person who is going to use lynx is not going to be too worried about layout anyway, I'd guess).
