Your Opinion Wanted on LQ Layout
We are considering changing the buttons in the upper right and I'd like to know what you think. In my opinion moving to the text based nav will reduce clutter, provide a cleaner interface and reduce bandwidth consumption. I want to know what *you* think!
New Look (reviews):

Old Look (HCL);

I like the new look. I hope the Search with the text field would be on every page. Also would like to see a longer text field to enter searches.

Isn't the search thing on both the old and new? Maybe my browser is just glitching.
Anyways, I don't care if the buttons are gone, But it would still be nice to have text links to the same things there.
If ti must be the new way then the "Main Menu" part should be moved up to where the ad is and the ad can be moved down to where the main menu is now. I just have a habit of going to the upper right corner, it would also be nise if they were more horizonally orgainized in two rows, than vertically in one column. either way I supposed I'll get used to though.

I prefer the new look which I find more compact and would not miss the buttons on the upper right. I tend not to look in that area too much anyway.

layout overhaul
I'm an industrial designer (product designer), and I believe an interface doesn't have to look good in order to be a good one. Of course I like eye candy too but functionality is very important to me.
Anyway, I would like to suggest an interface/layout overhaul. Keeping it as simple as possible for fast and easy navigation, and optimized for browser compatibility –kudos for LinuxQuestions.org team on this matter- and fast downloads. I know "it is already done" but it can be improved. I would go for an all text with tables "appearing to be buttons" with as little graphics as possible. I think the bandwidth is better spent on useful things, and of course the much needed ads and banners.
I like OSNews.com layout for example, it's very easy to read, and it is optimized for reading on screen. Again the current layout is not bad at all.

The "New Look" is way better IMO.
On this site , I only care for the content and "ease of reading".
Eye-candy?
GAH!
Way too distracting and cluttering.

What I mean is that you do not need graphics to have great looks, good scalability (for small screens for example), easy navigation, and ease of reading.
Please visit this page to see what I mean:

If you have Opera please disable the graphics to see that almost everything is coded on the page. Besides that way you save precious bandwidth.

Am I missing something here ?
The 'new' look is no different from the 'old' one besides from completely deleting the buttons, but I dont see any text-menu replacement for them.
The 'Main menu' at the right hand exist for both already.

I am fine with either looks. I mean, I did use the buttons at top occassionally so haveing the text menu in place is fine.
The ad on top also looks good. The only area I find that needs some work is to set the default size of the ad on the top such that one need not have to scroll horizontally.
I am fine with anything that LQ comes up with.
Cheers.

The menu at the right didn't always exist. It was recently added to all the pages.

Doh !!! OK... it makes sense now.
Thank you for pointing that out. And yes, I am in favor for the text better than the buttons.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Keep it coming. We won't be doing a more major overhaul in the immediate future, but stay tuned for some info on this in the coming month or so

I think it is allready clean enough.
Those buttons are ok also. They have small.Who have troubles with em?2800 modem users?
One thing i most hate in web pages is constant unnessesary changes to them.
Once working, easy and functional, why to change it?
Some things may just have their traditions.
I understand if it will be completely new design for taste...

I also like the new look. My only suggestion would be for the Home link to be at the top rather than the bottom of the list. -- J.W.
