You can now syndicate LinuxQuestions.org content

That's right. You can now grab the latest 10 thread titles and add them to your site. I am using RSS 0.91. Just grab your favorite RSS parser and include http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/backend.php as your news source. Feel free to post if you have any questions.

We now also have an Atom feed: http://www.linuxquestions.org/syndicate/lqatom.atom

trickykid 10-13-2001 10:01 PM

cool, i will have to add this to one of my sites once i get it all completed on everything else i need to do with it....

jeremy 10-16-2001 01:18 PM

A few people have contacted me saying that they were interested in putting the latest LinuxQuestions.org threads on their site, but they do not know how to setup an RSS script. Now RSS is the standard synication method, but I try to be accommodating ;)

To include the latest 10 thread title as a bulleted list simply insert the following code into your page:
Code:

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE=JavaScript SRC="http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/js.php"></script>
BTW - if you do decide to put set this up feel free to drop me a line so I can take a look at your site. Thanks.

Thnx Jeremy, now Im using RSS, and I was wondering how hard would it be to implement having the first 2 sentences added, instead of showing just the posts title?
I know, there's pros and cons, and ppl usually dont get to the point before sentence 10 :-]
But, would it be hard to add?

jeremy 11-07-2001 12:18 PM

A put this on the TODO list.

You should put those messeges to usenet as well, since may of linux people are using newsgroups and discuss there mostly.

danrees 05-26-2002 08:30 AM

Jeremy, that's a great idea to boost traffic.

A shame I don't have a website to put your content up on. :p

Goatdemon 12-06-2002 05:00 PM

p2 is a nice site, good job. (i didnt inspect the content though)

nouse66 03-04-2003 08:45 PM

why dont you use that feature on THIS site? i think it would be much more usefull than having the "security rep" stuff at the top.

Ummm...I was messing around with postnuke last night and so far of come up with this. I think the linuxquestions.org section is the coolest part of the page. Thats pretty neat Jeremy. Thanks!

trickykid 05-07-2003 02:03 AM

Yeah, you can see my LQ.org in action on my personal site here: http://www.trickykid.org/main.html

Azmeen 05-23-2003 10:10 AM

Is there any chance you would generate forum-specific backends? I would love to grab headlines of the latest posts in the Slack forum.

Thanks in advance!

Hi jeremy,

The slackware specific backend seems broken now... Was there any adjustments made on it on the past few days?

It now lists new posts on ALL forums!

Check it out: http://www.heritage-tech.net

(On the right hand side)

jeremy 07-17-2003 12:48 PM

Azmeen,

Sorry for the delay. If you would like to use either the slackware or security specific feeds please use the following URL's:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi..._slackware.xml
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d_security.xml

You can still use http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/backend.php for the general feed.

darthtux 09-27-2003 03:44 PM

I just install a RSS Reader plugin for Mozilla Firebird which open in a sidebar. Does anyone know I can stream LQ with it?

Lostman 11-10-2003 02:31 PM

I know it's an old thread but there is a theme available for Superkaramba that uses your feed. Puts it right on your desktop. Real nice. I'm behind a firewall, so I can't look for it, but check out www.kde-look.org.

rmartine 11-11-2003 01:41 AM

Weee!!!! More people using my theme!!!!

TY

Azmeen 05-05-2004 10:45 PM

The Slackware (and Security) forum backends are broken again...

Axo 06-10-2004 02:30 AM

Jeremy, latley when iv'e clicked on the last of the treads i get,
Code:

No thread specified.  If you followed a valid link, please notify the webmaster. If you know what you are looking for you can try a search
Its no big deal, just thought i'd mention it.

Regards

jeremy 06-10-2004 08:08 AM

Thanks AXO. The code looks good. Is this happening to anyone else?

AfroNinja 06-18-2004 02:21 PM

It would be cool to be able to pass a parameter to the PHP script to tell it how many items to return.

Just a thought.

jeremy 06-20-2004 01:46 PM

Due to the amount of people syndicating LQ content I had to move to a system that uses caching, so this would unfortunately be tough to implement.

jeremy 06-30-2004 02:55 PM

Just a heads up. An Atom feed has been added.

mimithebrain, I'm not getting any errors for backend.php and it validates fine with the couple validators I have checked. Can you clarify the error you are seeing? Thanks.

--jeremy

mimithebrain 07-17-2004 11:33 AM

mistake

sorry of my mistake
the bug is not from you
I shouldn't have this this comment being innexperienced in RSS.
Another newbie learning that konqueror does not display RSS pages.

When it comes to the error in the script, firefox does just fine running it.

:o

BroX 08-02-2004 04:27 AM

As I am new to this RSS thingie, some questions:
I use firefox 0.9.1, but when I hit a RSS button, I always get the following displayed:
Quote:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.
Do I need to install some software to be able to use RSS?

I installled Sage for firefox, which gives me the option to view RSS feeds in the side bar, but all I see there are my bookmarks.

I searched the forum, and got pointed to this thread but it didn't explain me much about how this is supposed to work.

Cheers, Leon.

Azmeen 08-02-2004 06:24 AM

I'm not a Sage support guy, but I'll try to help a fellow LQ member (and Slackware, Firefox user at that ;) ):

Firstly, create a new folder in your Firefox bookmarks and call it News Feeds (the name doesn't actually matter, but this is just an example).

Now it's time to populate this folder :)... Let's add the Slackware forum feed there. Right click this link: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi..._slackware.xml

And choose Bookmark This Link... from the context menu. In the Name field, type LQ's Slackware Forum.

Expand the bookmark folder list by clicking the Arrow Down button, and select the News Feeds folder. Finally, click the Add button.

Now go to the View top menu, select Sidebar and finally Sage. Sage should appear as a sidebar. Click the Options button and choose Settings from the dropdown menu.

At the Select Feed Folder dropbox, choose News Feeds and click on the OK button.

You should be all set now :)

BroX 08-02-2004 07:00 AM

THANKS a LOT Azmeen!!! All set ineed!

Cheers, Leon.

Projekt2 08-02-2004 08:21 AM

Just added the feed to my site

thanks,

mimithebrain 08-05-2004 08:19 PM

skubee 08-22-2004 08:22 PM
