You Can Now Stream LQ Radio Without an MP3 Player
That's right - you can now stream any LQ Radio content even if you don't have an mp3 or ogg player installed. The one caveat is that you do need flash installed (which I will admit to disliking, and apologize in advance for - if someone can think of a better solution, we're all ears). Head on over to LQ Radio and click the "LQ Radio Jukebox" link. I'll also add it to the nav here at LQ. As always, your feedback is appreciated.

hmm... sounds cool. When I click on the show link on my mac (grr... :) ) I get a streaming type thing. (which sucks with my bandwith- it's download-able, not streamable- I have to right click to download.
But I suppose that is normal, no biggy. But, totaly awesome idea. glad to see the site progressing. titanium_geek |
A new LQ Podcast has just been posted. If you're not already subscribed to the RSS feed, now is a great time to do so (or via iTunes if you're so inclined - iTunes LQ Radio, iTunes LQ Podcast). This is also a great time to test out the new streaming player.

Perhaps using Java instead of Flash?

We considered Java, but in the end it's even heavier than flash and more people have flash installed.

bummer it isn't installed on the knoppix live CD. flash is kinda universal but it's proprietary, right?

It is, but so is the only viable alternative that I can think of in this case (which is Java). If you have knoppix you have an mp3/ogg player, so you can stream the show that way anyway.

no... no prob really. I was recently part of a week long conference in charge of the computers. Stupid XP wouldn't work, so there was a need for knoppix to save the day. I just got back today, so I'm catching up. :) some probs, but it is nice to listen to the radio again. (streaming - nyeh. this bandwidth is good for downloads, sucky for streaming) The player would load, but then wouldn't play... I think it just is a bandwidth problem though.

Is it getting used a lot? I can't think of many reasons to not use a media player, either streaming or downloading. All computer-like thingies I come across that has a soundcard has a media player. :)

Ephracis, it is getting used a fair amount. I'd agree that personally, I'd prefer to use a media player - but choice is good.

I'm sure I saw a really simple and lite javascript stream player. it would use the html links on the page, and then use the property bgsound to play the song/file. dunno how standards friendly this approach is, but most people have javascript. (you have to install flash, usually, to get it, and disable javascript to un-get it.)

The javascript streamers that I have seen (granted I've never actually *looked* for one) have all relied on using a .m3u file to stream to a player that's installed on the client.

Having the wimpy button added to the podcast post itself would be nice also. Or maybe adding the wimpy button to the post on LinuxQuestions.org frontpage that announces each new podcast. Sort of a teaser/quicky sound bite type of thing.
Linking the LQ.org radio logo (LQRadio.png) back to http://radio.linuxquestions.org/ would be a nice addition. Not sure if it's be mentioned yet, but Odeo.com has an LQ radio channel. thanks for providing LQ radio, it's nice to listen to in the morning while sipping coffee |
