www.windowsquestions.org re-direct.

Just an idea, why not set this site so that when you type, 'www.windowsquestions.org' it directs you to the general forum.? I think it would be cool;)

You could get sued for copyright infringement. I've seen sillier lawsuits.

njbrain 03-10-2004 04:45 PM

I'm not sure where you are coming from. type www.windowsquestions.org and see what happens.:)

trickykid 03-10-2004 05:08 PM

Windows is a generic word, for all we know, we could literally be answering question for house windows.. ;)

Hey, I agree with you, but remember the Lindows trial. ;)

Plus, I think it's misleading and childish. Obviously this isn't a windows site at all, so it causes more confusion. You wouldn't like it if a linux url redirected to a windows site.

Umm. Wasnt there a lawsuit for 'MikeRowesoft'? If there was one for THAT, do you think you could get away with Windowsquestions.org?

And there would be no point.

This site has had www.windowsquestions.org for as long as its been up.. and nothing come of it yet. But its one thing to have something similiar to the actual name of the company from something that is generic.

And we do welcome Windows questions, they belong in General.

Pauli 03-10-2004 07:07 PM

I didnt realize it was allready like that.

And i think its pointless, FOR this is a site based almost in entirely on Linux and Linux distos, not windows. If you were to make a site based about windows and windows questions that would be an appropriate URL, as it is it is pointless. Many people curse 'windoze' as you call it, and would not feel welcome in an environment such as this.

Yes there are people who come here are curse Linux, they are called losers for all they do is come here and insult others for their preferences.

To claim that this site is also for windows is not true, the only windows things I have seen (allthough I havent read that much here) are related to dual booting and fixing a system because of a linux problem. This is a site for linux and always will be. Do not say it is also for the windows user who needs a bit of help getting his system running, its not.

And what about mikerowesoft? How come he got sued whereas YOU people have 'windows' in the redirecting URL whereas he didn't even have any copyrighted material for his site.

Just a st00pid n00b13's 2 cents :)

Well just to set the record straight, I do agree this site is geared mainly and only towards Linux users and OpenSource technologies but again let me emphasize this; we do allow Windows questions and if they are to be asked, they should go in our General forum.

We do have very knowledgeable members here who help with Linux and related questions, but they are also very knowledgeable with Windows as well. We are not like other sites that tell you to go somewhere else just cause its a Windows questions. If it gets to technical its polite to tell some that they might get better replies on a Windows geared site, but we do not tell people to not ask their Windows questions. If they are members here and ask Linux questions, like our members who help them in that aspect, they are more than welcome to ask a Windows question.

I think originally the domain www.windowsquestions.org was more for a gag than any thing else.

But again, do not say this site does not answer Windows questions, cause you are wrong then. If you don't want to reply to a Windows question, just skip over it and let someone else answer if they know the answer, etc.

Regards.

PS. And regarding the MikeRoweSoft site, well, when you say MikeRoweSoft, it sounds just like Microsoft. The only reason Microsoft won that was it was a teenager who didn't have the money to fight back. I'm sure in the end, the courts would have sided with the kid who created a site with his own personal name in it and a common word that no one could claim rights to which was soft.
Windows is too generic and that is one reason why Microsoft most likely won't do anything about it. Like I said before, we could be answering questions regarding the help of actual Windows that you look out of in your house or building of some kind.

I don't agree with that.;) I just helped a guy dump linux and install windows!;)

Pauli 03-11-2004 03:52 PM

Hmm. Did you not notice where I said they would not feel welcome in this environment? I am not talking specific instances but when people in general refer to Windows as Windoze, they are giving their opinion on the subject matter and a person who might ask a question on windows, would see that they all hate it and not feel welcome.

I do have a sense of humor here, I think it was a good gag, I just think its retarded that Microsoft sued MikeRoweSoft and then leaves things such as that. I know i know, it was a gag, but WindowsQuestions.org refering to a linux questions site is an obvious play with the 'Windows' trademark. You did not mean to make it as a gag for people who wanted to ask questions about their double hung or single hung windows, but the OS windows.

And I have gotten many answers for helping me with windows yes, but in all the Windows vs. Linux threads there are always people cursing windows saying how it is useless stupid etc etc etc. If I had a seriously technical question regarding windows I wouldnt want to go near those people :)

And I also had people help me dump linux, well more fix windows up so it would actually run. But now I lack a linux OS. But did you know there was only like 2 people who actually responded to my windows based questions?

Im just saying, you don't have a 'Windows' forum so you can't say you made areas to take questions on it. Because you said you can put it in general, doesnt mean that it is oriented to help that specific thing. If I have a questions of some filthy filthy porn, would that mean this is a porn site because I could ask it in general? :D No. Because you CAN ask something, doesn't make it oriented around that :)

And one last thing, how come you do not have avatars on this site? Because there would be too many members therefore too much server space? Just curious.

Asking something about porn would be against our rules, which its stated in the sexually orientated portion of the rule, etc.

And we don't have avatars as they are ugly, they take up resources and make a site look unprofessional. This has been asked many many times, you should search and you will find many answers as this site will never have avatars, not even if every member begged for them.

Regards.

Pauli 03-11-2004 04:35 PM

Seeesh. Grumpy grumpy. I was asking a little question, you didn't even need to reply if you think it was pointless. And besides that, I did not even ask to have one (EDIT: an avatar, not a reply). I was simply curious. Do you think Jeremy is unprofessional? For he has the one and only avie here?

OK then, the porn thing is a bad example but I simply was making a poor attempt at humor. Place any other thing which is allowed by the rules, lets say skateboarding, would that make this site a skateboarding site? Im just saying because you CAN ask something, it doesnt necessarily mean there are many people who will help and answer. That was my point.

And one last thing, I do not make a habit of searching for questions before I post them for a lot of the time when I search, I get completly irrelevant things that just mention in a little note the topic I was searching. Maybe I should have searched about the avatars, but maybe I didn't want to find about 50 million posts when people have said the word 'avatar'.

But then again, I could be putting the search words in the wrong text box, I dunno.

Regards.

Personally that's his choice and its small. Most I've seen on other forums are out of line by most members, huge, ugly, out of place and yes, just another resource that isn't necessary to ask and answer questions.

Regards.

PS. I search all the time and get the answers I need. I'm not grumpy, I'm just tired of that question to tell you the truth.

Pauli 03-11-2004 04:54 PM

You are too grumpy! I figured from all the grumpiness in the stickys at the top of some of the forums that you were tired of the same questions on many things, but I didn't notice that being in those specific gumbles of yours. I forget which list it was, but you listed a big long list of things which irritated you, I remember Gkrellm being among them. (EDIT: Hell even your siggie has grumpiness :) )

I'm sorry for asking a previously asked question, but is curiosity a sin? And if you did not want to answer, you did not have to.

And I see your point about huge avies, they do look rather stupid.

And since when do YOU need answers? :) You have about 15000 posts, that must mean a rather lot of experience, no?
