It doesn't. It uses php & MySQL.

We currently use the MySQL FULLTEXT functionality, but will likely be moving to Sphinx in the near future.

Why not use Google Search?

While we do offer Google Search as an alternative, it's in no way a viable alternative to having a native search index. It offers nearly none of the stock functionality (show me threads with no replies, show me threads started by $foo, search by post instead of thread) and there no way to ensure every single thread is indexed by Google.

I think I meant Google Site or Custom Search.

We offer Custom Search as I mentioned, and neither of those in any way mitigate a single example I gave.
