It sounds as if your umlaut difficulties are over. :) Will you mark this thread as 'solved'? (see above: Thread Tools).

The compose key seems like a good method for getting umlauts (for those who are interested in such things).

OK, they do not work in "Quick Rely".

It would appear that Advanced Mode is required to produce some characters. I think the take home message is that if Quick Reply doesn't work, go Advanced.

Ah, they will show up in the text entry box if you enter them into quick reply, but not when the message is posted.

keyboard layout us english international altgr dead keys
is a much better fried than compose key

but here after posing only in the advanced mode these characters survive
this was confusing and I wished the issue could be solved.
