What would you like to see?
 

The new forum code has been in place for a few weeks and everything seems stable. I am now turning to you, the LinuxQuestions member for advice on what features you would like to see next. This includes everything from small new forum features to entirely new sections to the site! You can also include any bugs you notice in the forum. Anything is fair game. I am already working on the FAQ/tutorial section, but surely you would like to see something else. This is your chance to be heard. I appreciate any and all feedback. Thanks.

and that bloody double post thing! i presume it's not in place quite yet as ppl are still double posting like mad.

also, it would be nicer to have an easier way to get back to a view new posts screen, i generally just press back a few times, or reload the bookmark, which sometimes seems to foget i'm still around, so the unread new posts all go away.

also a touch more consistency? all the links to Send Isajera a message! never work no matter how much a click them ;-) would make sense to just remove them completely, or implement the messaging.

I think that just about sums it up for many of us here.

Database Forum
 

How about a new forum for linux databases, generally. Could cover PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc, with web front-ends, custom C interfaces, etc.

Also, how about making use of the JavaScript focus() method to place the cursor in the first field on forms (like this one). I know its a bit picky, but it should be easy to implement. :)

An 'OPT IN' and 'OPT OUT' buttons.

As an example:

'Opt In'

There is a thread / post that I may be interested in but have nothing to contribute so I would 'OPT IN' hence, if logged in my e-mail address would be added to that post, so when ever that post or any of its threads are updated I would recieve e-mail notification.

'Opt Out'

Opt Out would on clicking it remove my e-mail address from the notification list for that post / threads.

I've found that if you contribute a totally pointless post to any thread that you might be interested in later you get notified automagically of anyone else's posts. Think of it as a 'Cheeky Opt-In'.

your mystical 'opt in' feature already exists. its the 'Receive updates on this thread' button.

and 'opt out' is on your profile under the subscribed forums section.

i'm not sure what use more forums would be. for something like databases.. well i don't think this is really the best place to ask teh question, as few people here seem to know much about sql. I know some but only a degree modules worth...

i would say that the number of visitors to the site is just about right, posts don't just get swamped and lost like on newsgroups, yet tehre's enough people to fix most problems, as opposed to linuxformat's forums.

personally i'd like to see 'Moderator' beneath my name, rather than the VERY dubious 'Guru' ;-) at least being a mod guarentees nothing about how much you know...

Actually, I found the original post to be very helpful. Tchet and
others helped get me on the right track towards getting my zip100 drive configured. The Iomega site has a brief but effective explain, which when coupled with help from them, enabled me to get it working.

I'm still working on my CDRW, display adapter (not quite right),
and my Package Manager crashes when I try to install packages.
Got a Netscape lock file (what the heck is that). And I've got some permissions screwed up. Just simple explains of what the different messages mean and work-arounds would be helpful.

It's really the contributors that make the post great.

I guess you shall start a live chat in this forum where people can get benefit from experts online.

I would also recommend linuxquestions.org to nominate some trustworthy experts from its members whom newbies like me can request to login to their machines and so the experts can show how to solve problem (tail of activities done by remote user on local machine can be seen on local machine, right ?)

Of course the procedure to allow these experts to login to any member's machine shall also be available from your site (I know we can use ssd or telnetd ??? ).

I think this service will be very helpful for all of us.

I personally just come here everyday as if checking email. I get in, do stuff and get out. It's that ease of use with the system that I like. I just do my thing, don't see a whole lot needing improvment. I'd love to see a FAQ as well as perhaps a few main distro specific forums. And as said above, a chat would be tré cool. But all in all thanks for a great site and it'd be great even if you stopped here.

how about a linux hardware section where people can talk about their hardware problems.

well as nice as that sounds for a forum for linux certifications, as far as i have seen here, it would be a very slow forum, as i only see a handful of specific questions ever in the past 9 months regarding linux certification questions. i think something like the hardware forum would get more traffic than rather a forum about certs..

linux certifications... yeah doubt that'd really be much use. it's nice to be able to have a specific forum, but when you spread them out so thinly it get's a bit daft. like someone who was posting here about 2 months ago, on their second post demands that the forum be urgently broken down into 200+ forums, one for every single MOBO, distro etc... daft.

and as for certifications.... i vote for isajera.. surely a nice young girl has better things to do than be here! i'm ugly, i'm meant to be in my room, hidden away from the world!! :) she oughta be locked up.
