What's up with new people using their email as username

Is there something ambiguous on the registration page?

Perhaps people just got used to the google way of doing things where you login with your email address and then have a visible 'screen name' that gets displayed to others within the site. It's not all that uncommon for sites to work that way.

I've seen it a few times - either they don't mind being spammed, or don't realize that the bots can find it.

I just had a look at the regeistration page; there's nothing ambiguous about it (it specifically asks for an email address further down).

No, GazL's comment is the most likely explanation.
