What's the diff: New posts vs Latest Posts?

I've wondered almost since I started using LQ about the difference between the 'View Latest Posts' and 'View New Posts' links on the LQ Main Menu. So, finally, I just need to know; what is the difference?

"View New Posts" shows all new posts since your last active session.

"View Latest Posts" by default shows all posts from the last 7 days, but can be arbitrarily modified from there.

New posts are the new posts since your last visit (up to a limit of 12 pages I think), the latest posts are the posts from the last 7 days. I think....

Thanks. Since I perpetually have a browser window or six open to a LQ thread, I wonder how to interpret 'since your last active session'?

An LQ session times out after 15 minutes of inactivity, but new threads posted during an active session will also be picked up by "View New Posts".
