view thread starter

If this has been asked before (or if
it's already implemented) apologies.

Can I set a conf so that, at the heading of
each post, if this post is from the thread
starter, to display that?

I just read a lot of back and forth conversations
here on LQ, and keep having to page up
to see the thread starter. (I'm too lazy to
remember to look each time I open a new thread).

This is probably already done, but I didn't see it in user cp
and didn't find anything from searching, and if
it isn't done, would be a really nice feature.

Are you asking to mark posts a certain way if they are from the person who started the thread? Just my 2 cents but I'm not sure how this would be useful. Often person A may ask the question, but persons B, C, and D may have a discussion that resolves the issue for all 4 people. Maybe I'm just missing some obvious point, but I'm not sure I understand what difference it would make if the OP's posts were flagged. Can you elaborate? -- J.W.

Ok so to the left here, under my uname,
it would just print 'Thread starter', since
I started this thread.

Yeah I know a lot of people wouldn't really
care for that. But it's so simple to do
and I'd like it for reading long threads.

I read a lot in Programming.
As the posts start getting long with big code
snippets, you might look at X's username and
and the 100 lines of code he/she just posted,
and think "wait, is this person the one who
had the original problem?"

I guess what I'm saying is, if you look at a lot
of long posts, they sort of start to run together.

Sure, it wouldn't always help, and yes you're
right, if 4 or 5 users get involved, it would lose
some of its effectiveness.

But I would appreciate it a lot, maybe someone
else would too? It could be an option that's
turned off by default, so most users wouldn't
even know it's there.

Edit:
Believe me, I know the situation of the site designers.
If you cater to every little whim of users (like the one
I was talking about) you'd end up with a big mess
of redundant configs.

In that case, maybe this would be better: in the left column
of each post, below the username, is a list of info about
that user.

Maybe a section could be added to User CP to control what
fields are printed here? It could be done with very little clutter
by adding to User CP under the Thread View heading, and
using a multiple selection drop down box.

And of course, it would default to the current set of items for
anyone who doesn't want to mess with it. This way it would
give flexibility to those who wanted it and stay out of everyone
else's way.

Well, I understand if not that many people want it enough,
but, for the record, I'd appreciate it a lot and use it a lot.
