Are you trying to unsubscribe from a particular thread or from the entire site?
If from the site then disable email notifications and if desired change your password to something you will never remember. If from a particular thread another method is to use the thread tools pull down menu and select unsubscribe when viewing that thread
I'm trying to unsubscribe from the entire site.
"Disable email notifications" where?
I'm sorry. Step-by-step please. Click-here, click-here, then 'etc'.
At the risk of sounding like I'm whining (yeah, I guess I am) other sites have a button labelled 'unsubscribe'. You click on it and the site says, "Sorry to see you go".
Why doesn't linuxquestions.org have the same thing?
Select My LQ at the top of the page and then look at the left side menus under settings and options. Select email and password. I don't know the answer. Just the way the site is configured.
I think that you are equating closing your account and unsubscribing from various emails generated by the site - they are not the same.
You can unsubscribe. You cannot delete your account.
The reason as I recall is that although you may wish to go, any threads that you have participated in must still remain, and must be associated with some account. Otherwise there would be discontinuous discussions and serious degradation of the information available here.
So, if what you want is not hear from LQ ever again, you set the various email options to not send you any email, or change your email address to one that you will never receive from again (maybe set up a free email somewhere just for that purpose).
I would not suggest changing your password because that will only inconvenience you if for any reason you want to return - maybe because you forgot to unsubscribe something...
So, to unsubscribe individual threads, go to My LQ > List Subscriptions (left sidebar, near bottom)... check the checkbox for all threads and at bottom of list select "Delete subscription", then click Go.
To stop all other email notifications, My LQ > Edit Options (left sidebar near middle) > Messaging and Notifications... uncheck all boxes, set options as you desire, click Save Changes at bottom.
To change your email address, My LQ > Edit Email and Password > Enter new email address... click Save Changes.
Distribution: Mainly Devuan, antiX, & Void, with Tiny Core, Fatdog, & BSD thrown in.

If you are still here & reading this, it would be helpful, (to us, the forum), to know why you want to leave.
(Is there something you think is not right?)
Firstly, thank you to all (especially Astrogeek) for the gracious responses to my request. When I posted about leaving the site I was afraid that I'd get some terse instructions along with, "Goodbye and good riddance". It was a relief that such was not the case.
fatmac: No, I didn't feel that something "is not right". It seemed to me that a lot of the threads were on esoteric topics. I've reconsidered that opinion and plan to stick around after all.

Hi...
I would agree, I think sometimes that is the case. When I first came here, it was like setting foot in an entirely different world than the one (or forum) I came from. Even the "Newbie" section seemed like it was filled with Linux experts who could write their own distributions if they wanted to.
At the same time, there is a lot that can be learned here! Glad you decided to stay.
