Finally on this.

Thanks to all who felt this ad was not suitable or borderline at best. I have completed the struggle with both PCs. Ad-blocker works well, and I can kill commercial ads.

Thanks also karamarisan for pointing me at the ad blocker. I had the thing half designed in my head already, but the addon is excellent.

I did discuss this with my wife. She would tolerate it if I felt I had to use the website, but felt much better in herself that I wasn't tolerating it, and considering her rights and feelings.

I close by pointing out the reaction of the other site to get such a posting that day. I had unashamedly adult ads also on slashdot.org('Come and play with me' stuff, or to be more accurate, 'come and play with yourself looking at me' stuff). I posted under YRO & privacy. The post was very quickly pulled down again and they don't give an <expletive deleted>. Here, while sounding a bit nutty, I received a very fair hearing, and a solution. Thanks!

...not even wanting to discuss the ad or its kind or what some people might feel when seeing it...
That is entirely up to you!

If you are using Firefox - "Adblock Plus" is what I use.

But:
to support the site I turned it off for "linuxquestions.org" and everything under it
- as I do with other sites whos services or opinion I value...
After all, they get paid for showing these and this money helps...

I still do not see any ads at all when I'm logged in.
Only when I'm not logged in yet, the ads appear - and I think to have seen a hard to overlook hint to exactly that behaviour while not being logged in, but I'm too lazy to log out and check

[edit] sorry, but I did not notice the last two posts before mine when I was writing this - it's already a non issue I suppose

It is a website issue that I see ads at all with my number of posts. This is an imperfect world, from which we conclude that everything we expect to work might not always do so.
It is complicated by the fact that I want to be seen to have 'freedom of speech' in these areas, or personal respect for me goes out the window. To preach something, I believe you have to live it.

business_kid, thanks again for the feedback. The side ad will actually go away for you soon. jomen is over the current threshold and correctly does not see that ad.

Don't ads also go away if you become a contributing member---regardless of post count?

All contributing members have the option of disabling all ads.

That's a well kept secret.
If I had known/found that I could disable ads, I would have disabled ads. Nevertheless, this has been an instructive thread

I too receive those ads every time i open LQ and i have to say they really annoying because i open LQ @work and i really dont feel comfortable with those ads.

At the same time, I don't think disabling ads is a good advice for LQ members, at the end this sites owner may need some financial help that they get from ads to continue their great work. Instead it is better to disable that kind of ads like the one form evonyonline.com ..

The ad in question was on my personal borderline & I hope that my S.O. understands the 'Net well enough to not make an issue of it. At work my screen is private (it better be, I have to reset passwords occasionally), but if it weren't I can see the possibility that someone might object.

If we are done w/ offensive ads, can we go on to offensive user names? Here's an obfuscated partial list. I have made the text the same color as the background; to view it, highlight it or quote it:
trendwhore or Consumerwhore or semawhore or distrowhore or linuxwhore or Whoresteak or MBA Whore or thecodwhore

acidslut or it_slut or sluth or JabbaTheSlut or bubbleslut or slut face or Mortisluter or Albupslut

bonvoyage pussy or pussyfoot or pussylicker or Big Pussy or touchmypussyy or smallpussy or sexypussy or Pussycrrawller or -=#pussygirl#=- or MypeCypepussyn or MypeCypepussyf

atitsince82 or Titson or bigtitslittletits or ppetitsm or Annabigtits or BigTitsLoversgo or titsyx or MizestitsNerm or ohshxtitsnur

Harshit or bwishit or shitatam or Shin Takeshita or Akshito or ihatethisshit_1 or bullshit or yoshitec or nishit_dave or shitian8848 or dontknowshit or shitij or Kshitij_bhargav or preshit or lakshitha or cparikshith or FlashIT or shitoryu or Penguinshit or dumbshit or ashitgamoth or kshitizv or kshitiz or nishith82 or shithead or OatShit or shithawk or eat_shitake or akshita or nishith or rakshith or shitijsah or harshit24 or Harshith.S or ashitaka or harshit_tandon2004 or lakshithaww or shittycrap or shital yelane or kshitij_dixit or rakshithnagaraj or darshita or harshit2811 or ipshita or harshit99

PissOnWindows or pissedoffpolski or pissy_pants or TheGreatPissant or pissouille or Mats_Piss_Piss or MepisSlayer or pissedsphinx or pissedoff or acopisshe or pissin or PisstMSTRCHIEF or pisspisss or Itelpissillit or epissiopupe or pissed or pissarro or pissyboy001

f2k & c2t had 0 results

Mind you I am quoting LQ public search results, not actually using these terms myself. Also, note that some of the above include offensive letter strings in accidental, innocent ways. OTOH, many of them are clearly intentionally offensive. Should LQ censor these? At certain magnifications they are enlarged more than the bodies of posts, & therefore more likely to offend a passerby, let alone the actual viewer.

Personal quirk: I find some of the ones that contain "Whore" the most offensive.

In all honesty - I think we should'nt!

a few reasons - though reason is largely not at play...

It could be assumed that half the names in that list are those of spammers anyway.
Another good half is what appears to be from the indian region and only to english natives could even begin to appear as offensive.
Some might be intentional by people with a different kind of humor.

One can be offended - or choose not to be, if the question of whether or not arises.
After all, we don't know each other.
Nobody can offend me by giving himself/herself some ... name. Such a name may tell a lot about the person - making themself look bad (and recieving no further attention).
That is enough for me.

plus:
rules are good - censorship is not (and is never perfect, and involves a lot of work, and still there are false positives, and...)
...just not worth it...

All the best!

In linuxforums.org's forums, they have someone saying they're a 13 year old girl, and at least once they have used a pornographic picture as their avatar.
No one cares.

& we shouldn't care that they don't care. LQ is trying to be better -- a professional site that will never embarrass you if someone looks over your shoulder while you are using it at work. More important, one that cannot get you in trouble w/ your company, nor your company in trouble w/ the government for creating a "hostile work environment"; however ridiculous the concept may seem.

If someone can send me the click-through domain for this particular ad, I'll make sure it gets blocked. Thanks.

On the subject of names, if anyone does see one that is offensive, please email one of us or report it. We won't act on every single one - offensive is on a sliding scale after all - but we do act on the clearly offensive ones. The mods are not yet all seeing (I believe that's on the To Do list for the next upgrade of LQ - version 1984, I think) and so we cannot catch them all.

And yup, if someone does come here with their pornography and their "I'm a poor young girl who needs a real man" stuff, we will run them out of town!
