Hey LQ fans,

Just a reminder to all the members who like getting stuck into a problem. You can instantly hit a search of all threads which have not yet recieved any response. It'd be great to be able to see the number of pages freeze in it's steps with all the avid members of LQ.org having a bash at a thread that they might otherwise have not answered. Answering zero reply threads can be a great way to learn about new parts of linux. Instead of reading a post and maybe thinking "I don't know anything about that." and moving on, if the question seems reasonable, it can be good to take the initiative to do a little research. Not just to help someone else out, but to increase your own knowledge of something you'd not touched before.

I second that. I reads the 0 replies search several times a day and try to answer as many questions as I possibly can. Unfortunately, I don't know everything and don't have the ability to answer threads as fast as they come in.

A great point Chris - thanks for the reminder. Let's see how low we can get the 0 reply threads!

i won't hold out for having none, but it's something to really work at i think.

On this note and based on an idea that Chris had, threads with 0 replies will now be automatically bumped after 16 and 32 hours. If you have any questions, let me know.

While not so much a question I just wanted to say that I think this is a great idea: this way, unanswered questions won't get lost in the back of the pack! :)

A worthy call to arms! And before someone says it no, a recursive rm on all files from the root directory is not a proper answer on how to configure iptables...

Maybe chmod 777 /etc/shadow /etc/passwd is? :)

One thing I do when searching thru 0 replied posts is after answering one, I scroll down to find similiar posts, find the 0 replied posts from there since at times the answers might be the same or at least their on the same topic.

Let me suggest another kind of search:

If it's not too much of a drain on the system, how about a search for "threads with only one poster"?

You see, most often, people bump their threads up to regain attention on the first page, so many of those threads without 0 replies also lie around without any answers.

Do i read this right. Zero reply post get deleted automaticly?

If yes, i really don´t like this. I think it throws bad light on a forum if the members are not able to at least point one into the right direction.

If no, forget what you red.

Bumped = Gets bumped back to the top, as if you were going to reply to it and its back on top, but they'll get bumped without a reply and still show 0 replies.

We don't delete threads or posts here under any circumstances, except under extreme and rare conditions.

I took on three of zero-repliers. You´ve been totaly right, it´s a good chalenge and a great way to learn new things or stress on old knowledge.

When I first looked at the zero reply link yesterday, it was 1076 pages long.

It's now 1074 pages long. We're making slow but steady progress it seems! :D

BTW -- most of the posts listed at the end of the list are old announcements etc by jeremy. Since they weren't questions, could the search be edited to exclude jeremy's posts (like the newletter posts that are locked before they are replied to) ?

I likewise think this is a great idea, and would encourage everyone to drop in on the Zero Replies threads from time to time to answer as many as you can. The new auto-bump feature is intended to give added visibility to threads that were created in opposite time zones, because sometimes during periods of high activity a post that was created half a day ago (relative to you) might get pushed down the list relatively quickly. Giving the Zero Reply posts a second chance can only be a good thing, and if you think about it, the more questions that get answered, the less of a chance that the same question will be reposted by someone else -- if someone with a given question sees the answer in an active thread, there would be no need to ask it again.
