Thread Tools -> Mark this thread as solved

I have seen many members including myself making a post just to notify the OP as follows:

Quote:
Please mark as SOLVED (through thread tools menu at the top of this page) if you think your problem has been solved.
Problem: Most of the newbies and new members do not know/see the thread tools menu. Of course it is mentioned in the FAQ but most people do not have the time/patience to read it.

How about having a note on the top of page viewable only to OP as follows:
Quote:
You can mark the thread SOLVED if you think you have got an answer to your problem through the Thread tools menu at the top of this page !
OR

Have a Mark this thread SOLVED button at the top of the page visible only to OP !

Well, after opening my first thread i wanted to mark it as solved so it won't bother members anymore. I was pretty lucky to find that option pretty quickly (but not immediatly)

I guess you were concerned that's why you bothered to search for the SOLVED labeling feature,

most people do not bother,

IMHO if they see a banner reminding them, that a thread CAN be marked solved, may be they'll consider clicking that button/banner.. rather than searching for a unknown feature ..

Keep in mind that we recently implemented a feature notifying a member after their first post explaining how to mark it resolved if they haven't done so. The usage of the feature has gone up since this notification. If the consensus is that some kind of additional on-site link more visible would help, it's something we'd consider. Thanks for the feedback.

I think that some form of message, maybe after the first post or the first response, would help to promote it to people who have been here a while or use the board infrequently.

Since the "Did you find this post helpful" feature isn't available on the thread starter, could "Mark this thread as solved" replace it? (visible only to the OP, of course).

Just a thought...

Secondly, "Thanks" button is also not there in the thread starter post.

Could "Mark this thread as solved" button be there in its place ?

I've implemented this on a trial basis. As always, feedback is appreciated.

On reading your last post Jeremy, I scrolled up to locate the new "Mark this thread solved" feature.

Though I did find it out, but it was not very eye-catching, I could have missed it out, if I was not told about it.

[May be because my first post filled my whole screen and I had to scroll down TO SEE IF ANYTHING IS THERE AT THE BOTTOM]

How about writing it in Red color and making the font bold ?

Reason for request of font & color change: On no account should OP miss seeing this feature.

This will not disfigure the forum as it will be visible only to OP !

You could also automatically mark it as solved if say 30 days go by without activity.

As I noticed in Linux Exchange, when I get a new answer there, I see a pleasant Grey colored banner at the top saying "you have got some new responses...click here"

I can't miss seeing that banner even if I am in a hurry.

How about having that kind of a banner here only for OP of course ... saying "Click here to mark this thread SOLVED".

That will be eye catching enough, I suppose, and will not be problematic for others as it will be visible only to OP.

Thanks for the feedback. We have no plans to make the link red or add an additional banner at this time, but we'll monitor usage and see what kind of impact this change has made.

After using it on a few of my older threads, I believe it looks and works just fine. Nice reminder to (ahem) "some" of us that the SOLVED feature exists, too.

One small change though (which you may have already considered for if/when you decide to keep this feature), is remove the link once it's been used.

Cheers
