Clicking on an individual thread will mark it read. You can also mark read on a per forum basis via the link in "Forum Tools".

Not on a zero reply thread. I clicked on it several times. The only thing which would mark it read is by clicking Mark all threads read.

While it's possible a Zero Reply thread could re-appear as a result of the autobump feature, it should always disappear as normal after a single subsequent read. If it's not, that's a bug that we'll have to look into.

I just reloaded My LQ and a few read threads showed up as being unread. They disappeared from the list once I visisted them again.

I don't know if this is some bug, but I thought I would mention it.

Also note that the little read/unread indicator on each post said "read" in the posts inside of all the threads that were mistakenly marked as unread.

Then, if I remain inactive for 900s, then everything will be marked as read again?

Finally, this only applies to the last two weeks' worth of activity, right?

I'm particularly confused by Jeremy's statement: "You'll need to click "Mark Forums Read" moving forward, they will not automatically be marked as read as they were using the old system." What does that mean in the context of the above, if everything reverts after 15m?
The 15 minutes has NOTHING to do with the new system. that was for the OLD system.

two matters of importance

Sounds like a good way to go, not quickly expiring threads.

However as to posting my name and questions to FaceBook et al, that I'm not in favor of. please amend user posts to first provide an opt in and opt out of such practices, thank you.

We never post your name or any LQ threads (aside for some LQ announcements) to facebook.

Re-appearing ZRT as a result of the autobump feature is not the problem, I think.
I again have another ZRT subscribed, and I have clicked on it at least 5 times
in 3 minutes just now. It is still there (in the usercp), and that too in the bold
font.

Jeremy I can confirm that apparently auto-bumped thread don't get "read" no matter how many times I click on it.

Well as I said, I had found the descriptions of the changes kind of confusing, Especially since the OP clearly said this:

Quote:
[1] Once a user has been inactive for 900 seconds all threads and forums are considered read. Individual threads are marked as read within a session via cookies.
It's only just now, after very carefully reading the post several times, that it's become clear to me that this was intended as a description of the old system. I had missed the fact that the [1] is a reference from the text above it.

Now that I've had a couple of days to get used to it, I guess it's an improvement. I've switched to using "View New Posts" to see what's appeared since my last visit, and when I'm ready to leave I mark everything as read so that it starts tracking again from a clean slate. It seems to work well enough to keep me on track.

I particularly like the way it inserts a line showing exactly when your last visit was, BTW.

I've updated the OP with old and new. Hopefully that clarifies things for others.

The default seems to be 30 days - ubuntuforums has it set at 3 days which is much too short for me.

eta: Whatever age limit might be sent, I think this new read-marking method is a good thing.
We currently have it set to two week, but we may adjust that based on member feedback.

I think 2 weeks is too short. I'd say try 2 weeks for a while to make sure it does not cause any problems, and if no problems, try 30 days.

I am not adjusting well to the new view. Is there a way to provide a profile option so members can use either the old viewing method or the new?

I want only to see threads that have changed since my last visit. Others like the new presentation method. A profile option would accomodate both.

Manually marking all threads as being read is an unconvenient extra step. Actually two steps for people who keep JavaScript disabled because the top level Quick Links link has to be selected before the Mark Forums Read link is available. Even if the Mark Forums Read link was readily available, that still requires an extra step every day to change the view.

I visit only one forum and the old view let me know immediately what was new. I never use the View New Posts option. I never had to manually maintain my visits as I do now with the new view.

I vote for a profile option or a return to the old method.

And thanks for LQ!

as a retired artist, all this high-tech lay-out is incompatible with my brain.i was just hoping to find some simple way to improve the response of my computer.i'm not qualified to answer any of those questions.the responses i got before led to endless sidetrips.the frustration of this is equal to the frustration of slow responses by the computer.so,do ya'll have a special unit to help computer retards?,perhaps i can meet someone to communicate with, who could benefit from my studies of uncommon healings of diseases,by unconventional doctors.please see "there is a cure for that" on my new facebook page.THANK YOU!!! philip richey.
