This site keeps crashing my computer!
 

Sorry for the bummer Subject.

When I signed up for the site, I had no problems reading the posts, but as soon as I posted something, my computer locked up tight as a drum. There was no way out short of a HARD reboot. And I mean, nothing worked period. The only way I'm doing this now is through W2K, which is usually pretty stable no matter what. I'm hoping and praying right now that this works. Up until now I haven't even been able to tell anyone because of the lockups. This happened with Windows ME and it also happened with RedHat7 (yeah it's old but that what I've been using).

Nothing comes to mind except maybe some kind of site script maybe? I really don't know if this post will make it through on Win 2000, but I hope so. I'm talking the kind of lockup where you have NO out except turn the machine off and then back on while drives get checked and everything. Even Linux did this. Does anyone have a clue why this keeps happening? Maybe this will go through on W2K, I hope so as it's the first time I've been able to even ask this. It's a fresh install with an up-to-date virus scanner, so I dearly hope after I post this I can reboot clean.

If others have experienced this, I'd like to know. I'm 45 and have been using computers since I knew what they were, so please don't think I'm a newbie or something.

Nothing in this site can cause your computer to crash. We have millions of visitors and hundreds of thousands of registered users... and none of us have this kind of an issue with the site.

You might be having hardware problems going by your description of the issue. Software issues do not usually result in this kind of lockup, particularly when you've tried multiple platforms. And yes, hardware issues can crop up in strange ways.

As mentioned there's really nothing at LQ that should even crash a browser, let alone a machine. Did you get an error message before the crash? Does this reproducibly happen at LQ but never at others sites?

If it only happens with this site then its unlikely to be a
hardware problem. Try clearing your browser history, browser
cache and cookies.

It's most likely the browser software locking your machine when you try and submit a post. Try a different browser.

hari, there could be lots of people that have issues with LQ, they just can't get in to post about it... (heaven forbid!)

What browser are you using, gmorris?

Well, if there are, I'm sure at least half a dozen of them would have had access to another computer from where they can post and we'd have been sure to have heard about it :D

If many people were having a problem, they'd also tend to email me. Looking at the stats, we get posts from every browser imaginable and then some. While it's not impossible that it's LQ actually causing the problem, it's highly unlikely that a problem would only impact one person.

OK, I'm using ME right now, the one that started giving me probs at first. Using IE6, latest service pack and all. On linux, I was using (as I said) RedHat 7, and using NetScape that came with it. Since I was sharing the Internet connection with this computer, I don't know whether to blame the connection or what for the crash of Linux while doing the same. Let me see if this goes through OK, and if not I'll reboot to W2K and see if I can again get in.

This is undoubtedly one of the most bizzare things that I've ever had happen with a message site, so I'm hoping for the best.

Redhat7? Your about 5 years behind, I'd suggest upgrading or at least possibly upgrading the browser (which probably needs lots of dependencies) to come up to par. Even ME was as piece of crap, you should just do away with it altogether, your better off with Win98 instead of ME if you insist on running such things. Sorry, don't want to sound like a bigot but, you seem outdated currently ;)

dude... ubuntu will send you free CDs... if you won't get a new linux for bandwidth considerations. free CDs!

Folks, Windows 2000 is the most current OS I have. I do development when I can, so I need sometimes older systems. I have no time to work full time, as I must take care of my ol' lady (Multiple Sclerosis) and I have a bad back from and accident 20 or so years ago. I do have Win '98, 95 even 3.1 and an old 386 that still runs just plain old DOS! No high speed internet here, so I'm stuck with what I can afford or someone is kind enough to give me. I'ts called "dirt poor", and we make it on less that $1200/mo. US. (I recently saw Diane Sawyer in N. Korea and apparently some live on $700 US per YEAR! We could live like kings over there, but I'd hate the lifestyle and it'd probably be hard to get the medication she needs.)

Anyway, I'd be glad to have any newer Linux Distro as long as I don't have to download it, and as an afterthought, that last post did not crash ME, so I'm hoping for the same this time.

I've been "trolling" here reading some very interesting threads all over this forum for 10 days or so (finally registered). Never crashed once using Firefox, Opera and Epiphany in Debian Etch.

I guess this is a perfect time to drop in Firefox. Not that it'll solve your problem necessarily. But you'll be better off regardless.

I've experienced a problem similar to yours with media intensive sites. Turned out to be the plugins.

You could say I don't love flash particulary much anymore.
