This is why I don't populate the HCL

Seems I'm always wasting time entering data that never makes it into the db. Needless to say I won't be entering this one again.

Database error! Please report to System Administrator.

Crito, we are aware of the problem and are doing everything we can to rectify it ASAP. We're doing everything we can to improve the HCL (and reviews sections). Thanks for the patience.

Such negativity...

Perhaps instead of complaining, reporting such things in a polite manner helps everyone out in the long stretch instead of such a negative attitude towards it. Jeremy is only human and pretty much runs the technical aspect of this site on his own. He also works full time as LQ does not pay the bills and that is not it's intentions.

So giving a little patience in such manners without causing such a fuss makes things a little more smoother when such things occur.

Such a condescending tone.

Perhaps instead of insulting people who are entering data into Jeremy's database for free, you should attempt to understand their frustration when the site is less than cooperative. That'll help ensure that future LQ users will contniue to enter data in Jeremy's database for free, unlike me who just lost interest because of your rude comment.

Just to clarify, I'd certainly not consider it "my" database. It's LQ's and therefore the communities. I apologize that the site was less than cooperative. We recently underwent a complete site redesign that included rewriting code for the forums, HCL, Reviews, LA and other sections. After that upgrade we did have some bugs to shake out. I hope you'll reconsider and put your entries into the HCL at some point - it really is beneficial for not only LQ, but the community at large.

It was a condescending tone I gave and I meant for it to be. I'm truly sorry you lost some minutes from your life by entering in an HCL Entry and it failed due to a bug on the server. But whining about it and proclaiming that your not going to waste your time ever again by trying to resubmit it isn't going to resolve the issue. Like Jeremy stated, this site is setup for a community, not him.

No one told you to submit an HCL entry, but reporting problems to the administrator of a site if they are unaware helps the administrator out. Bitching about it doesn't help and in my own opinion, really uncalled for in such issues on a site like this.

What you did would be like me writing up an email using Gmail and their server crashed while I was writing it but my browser was unaware until I finished it to then submit, causing me to lose everything cause after I hit the back button, the typed data in the form dissappeared so I call up Google to bitch about it to them..

What you need to do in these situations is calm down, take a deep breath and then notify the site administrator to let them know there is a problem with their site and system, without the rude complaints.

The problem has been fixed and I'd really like this not to turn into a flamewar. I can see the frustration that the site was not functioning properly, but as Drew said we really do work to fix things as fast as we can. I hope this matter has been resolved to everyones satisfaction - I don't think either side being condescending is going to help anyone. Thanks.

Perhaps instead of accessing this wonderful site Jeremy is footing the bill for, for free. . .

you should realize that the site is being updated in Jeremy's and others' spare time, and having users harass them as their thank-you is less than appreciation.

Taking such an understanding approach and expressing actual appreciation for this wonderful free service will encourage more to participate, and possibly even raise jeremy's attention to problems on the site of which he may not yet be aware. . .

:tsk: Unlike ingrates who wish to just hurl insults at people who offer them useful services at no financial cost whatsoever. :tsk:

BTW I was just taking your post and turning the argument around 180* so you can see how your complaint comes across - no actual offense was intended. Just FYI.

I've learnt the hard way, although I still get caught from time to time ...
whenever you are going to post a fairly long and important post, to type the thing into wordpad, word, KWrite etc etc and save it first.

I've lost many posts on many forums for all sorts of reasons, so don't get mad get even !! save your post as a text file somewhere first.

cheers

Nothing's perfect in life. Just deal with it and get on with life. Managing such a huge site is a difficult task. Losing a little bit of data occasionally while posting isn't going to kill you. Hell, I've had hard disks trashing years of hard work and I cannot cry over split milk.

I still consider this site as a marvel the way Jeremy is able to host it and bear the costs involved. Certainly I don't believe advertising covers a lot of it. Perhaps people should think a bit about how much the admin works behind the scenes to keep a site such as thing up and running 99% of the time.

I don't write this just to suck up to the staff here, but I know that just managing such a complex, dynamic website can be a very difficult task and I can understand that a few errors creep in here and there with such a customized code base...

When errors come up it might be much better to type:

Hi, Jeremy,

I just tried to get this such-and-such done, but I couldn't get it to work. Perhaps you can look into it and see why it isn't working.
rather than the way the OP posted.
