It was so nice when the names of the thanker posters used to be displayed under the thanked post ! No confusions, No guessings !! Alas that has been removed now (for unknown reasons) !

What does that make old-timers who have been doing
this for 8 years without it, and before the "Thanks"
crept up?

At the end of the day to me it feels like a "mine is
longer than yours" contest. And there's nothing wrong
with being competitive; does it add value, though?
Only in cases of people like Mr xeleema who don't want
to play if they can't have competition, and whose
potentially good advice/trouble-shooting skills will
be missing w/o it. How many people will stop posting
because of the missing thanks?

Not necessarily a sign of altruism, or a wish to help
others for its own merit.


Anyway - I still think there's no proper metric for the
thanks system, I've seen intros being thanked, I've had
"thanked" posts that I'd disagree with for their rating.
Ah well ... never mind. How many out of ~ 20,000 active
members have expressed their view on the thanks system in
this thread? 10, 15? Can't be that important, really.

Ah yesterday I responded to a newbie in kernel forum by asking him about a possible error in one post and then pointing him to a relevant thread (which I had searched in Google for HIM) in the second post.

Today he replied telling he added a code statement (That code statement was clearly mentioned in the link I gave him)

But no thanks from him !!! Leave the thanks button alone, there was no thanks in writing too !!!

I didn't waste my time replying to him for gaining thanks, I did it because I felt like helping him.

I hate when people are not courteous !!!! and I am not going to help him further now !

Thanks does matter.

And if that is in the form of a button as well as written, I'll like it more.

Though I like people to know that I was helpful, it doesn't mean that I help only for getting thanks.

And I would not like to suffer if some people tend to misuse the thanks button.

And that "helpful post" IS ACTUALLY misused to vent anger !

Have you actually seen it being used in this manner, or do you feel that it has the potential to be used in this manner?

Thinking about how the proposed reputation system will work, I've disabled the no answer to "Did you find this post helpful" until you're a Senior Member or above.

I would have shown you many posts labeled not helpful for reasons mentioned in Post 10.
but can't search them now !

I remember many posts where appropriate suggestions have been given but still posts marked as "not helpful" without any explanation !

I remember my posts where I pointed the newbies to the relevant pages in FAQ in w.r.t to "andLinux" and the post marked as "not helpful" just because the exact answer was in the next link of that FAQ site
and the newbie was not bothered to search further !

I suggest "not helpful" clicks should be only allowed to the members after 200 posts.
