Suggestion: Option to logout from LQ
 

I like this board a lot, and have learnt a huge amount from it - thanks to all who maintain / contribute.

I like the way that, when I login, new posts are highlighted with the yellow envelope at the left.

Often when I am reading posts I need to pause to go off and check something (or even do some real work!) but when I come back, even though I have left the LQ windows open, because there has been a period of inactivity (10 mins?), the board assumes that I have left. It seems to be resetting the "Time board last visited" or something - so new replies that I haven't seen, are now marked as "old".

This is annoying. Would it be possible to have a "Logout" button so this did not happen? Perhaps configurable through the "Edit Options" link like this:

(*) Don't assume I have left LQ until I logout.
( ) Assume I have left if no activity for 10 mins.

You could leave the default behaviour as it is to avoid upsetting too many people, but those of us who sometimes need to pause reading and then return later would be able to pick up where we left off.

There is a Log Out button already, on the menu on the right title "My LQ". I agree though, the option to turn off the default timeout would be useful.

Just check the remember me box when you login and then you need to specifically log out and your session will not expire.

I have the "Remember me" box ticked, so when I go to www.linuxquestions.org I am automatically "Welcome back'd", which is good - but this is not the problem. If, while I am viewing the board, I do not click on something every 10 mins or so, all threads that were marked as "There's something new you haven't seen" (the yellow envelope), become marked as "old" (the blue/grey envelope). I don't want this to happen every time I am away from the computer for a few minutes. I haven't logged out, I haven't closed any windows, I just haven't clicked on any LQ links for 10 mins. Maybe I didn't explain myself clearly enough in my OP.

I have noticed that problem myself. I think the default timeout for new messages needs to be increased.

The timeout for sessions is 15 minutes, which I think is the right balance. You have the ability to view threads from the last X hours in the UserCP, so if you accidentally get timed out you can go back and view older threads.

Another suggestion.

i think the Logout button (or link) should be place on the right side of "My LQ" Or perhaps put it inside the main menu entry, or any place that easily visibile by users. I lost my way locating the Logout function the 1st time i join this forum. I hope someday this won't happen with new users

The logout link is the last link in the MyLQ menu box.

I wish I could find the 'logout'. I dont like leaving a session logged in - especially on a public access machine.

I'm new to this site - I almost never returned as I couldnt see a logout button when I browsed without logging in. I logged in with the 'remember me' unchecked. I dont know if thats why I cant see a logout button anywhere but regardless, it should be possible for the users to force a logoff at any time.

Ideally it should be prominent.

There is a "Log Out" link on every single page of the site, in the right hand nav.

Is this forum based on vbulletin? (I seem to remember seeing that somewhere.)
The latest vbulletin has a database reference for new threads (I'm sure that's phrased wrong, I don't know what's better!) so that they stay new until they're read/2 weeks, rather than based on the cookie-timeout.
If it's true that this is vbulletin-based, any idea if/when you'll change to 3.5?
That's about the only feature I really like better in 3.5, but it's a great one!

We have no plans to move to the database-based read marking at this time.

Thanks - I was looking at the MyLQ on the top tool bar. I saw the menu on the right side and it didnt occur to me to scroll down past the adverts - I didn't expect a second nav menu below the advert.

Perhaps the logout should be moved to the top of the page as thats where most sites have the Logout button.

it does take a little looking, and knowing the righthand nav system.

for a newbie that could be confusing. I know jeremy needs to eat, so we have ads on LQ, but really, it hides the MyLQ navbar.
The adsense isn't much of an issue, just the large banner.
