Suggestion: Additional HCL categories
Hi Jeremy, etc.
I have a suggestion for the HCL. As you're aware, technology moves very quickly and it's difficult to get reviews on motherboards, however many motherboards use the same chipsets (for the northbridge, southbridge, audio, video, network, and so forth). When I choose a motherboard I first look at the failure rate, then features, and then check each board chipset and make my decision based on the chipset for each component (or in the case of my Asus P4G800V, ignore compatibility issues because I had plenty of spare compatible add-in cards to use)
So: My suggestion is to add new categories:
Parent category: Embedded chipsets
Subcategories:
- Motherboard chipset (Northbridge/southbridge)
- Network chipset
- Video chipset
- (additional) RAID/secondary ATA chipset
- SCSI chipset
This makes it easy to decide whether one should check Company A's foo motherboard or bar motherboard, because although there may not be a review of that particular board, there will be entries for the various chipsets the board incorporates, giving the user a very high probability of selecting a bleeding-edge board that works even though no Linux reviews exist for that particular model yet.
