Suggestion
I have a little suggestion to forums. Could hardware area be divided in 3 subsections like
general graphics sound. Currently too many threads fall too fast too far from first page in hardware area. |
markelo: at least this one has a better argument then splitting the software forum up
but i do think it might cause a lot of confusion.. look at the distributes forum, with all those sub forums getting a reply to a rare distro question takes a lot longer then using a top level forum like linux - general/newbie/software/security/hardware anyways, as trickykid wrote (i think it was a lot... tho i cant remember where at....:) ) just bump up the thread in like 24 hours if ya not getting help and if it back to far this should be fun to see how it shall turn out |

Anyway there is quite lot activity under hardware area and if everyone would start to bump messages up it would cause lot of posts. Currently same questions are asked which were answered or asked 3 pages earlier. That means that some one who just browses forums ( looks first pages ) could answer those questions but because doesn't see them, leaves questions unanswered. It might cause more troubles though but could it be tried for a while and see what happens ? |
markelo - it really makes no difference how many forums and sub-forums we have, there is a large number of people who just do not search. I carried ou this search: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...der=descending
It is the now legendary "which distro" search - despite the fact that there are a larg number of these threads and all the answers are identical, the question is still asked - and not just by new members. We have the Distributions forum and the sub-forums and the questions are still asked. The best thing to do is to leave your question for 24 hours (our members are based all around the world and you have to allow for different time zones) then, if no one has answered you bump it by providing more information, or things you have tried while waiting. |
As the site grows I think adding more sub-forums will be inevitable. Linux - Hardware would likely be a good first candidate for this.

jeremy & moderators; suggestion, possible to place reminder at top of each thread and forum with emphasis towards all members posting to please read the howto,s and/or hcl prior to posting. then answering more urgent requests from members posting problems that could be better helped by expierenced members. those of us could point towards howtos that are not as learned as expierenced. is this work-able.

As suggested in some other threads as well, maybe the 'Has this been asked before' should be highlighted more. Maybe the search be modified so that it gives accurate results.
That would help folks find answers and prevent the same question being answered repeatedly. |
