Strong Word Filter suggestion

Well....to be frank, this is an idea that has struck me while browsing LQ posts...

I have seen so many posts in so many forums with words such as F###, Shit....and so on..( I dont need to even write them....)

What I feel is....before a member makes a post, there should be pre-post scan for possible abusive or slang words....In case any such instance is encountered, the member should receive an alert message and the thread should remain unposted until the offending word(s) are removed from the post.

This will have couple of benefits...one - the forum will be clean of words abusive in nature, and most importantly, members will become more aware that using abusive language should be avoided at public forums....Also, moderators would have lesser trouble instructing posters to mind their language...

What do u guys have to say bout' that?

Regards,

amit

I totally and completely disagree.

One thing I like about LQ is that there *isn't* a huge amount of profanity *without* there being strict rules about it. If people go overboard, maybe something gets said telling them to chill, but nobody has to watch each and every single word that they might feel like uttering. Making a rule of censorship is just wrong, besides treating people like babies. Flipside is if jeremy has a serious problem with it - then he can do whatever he wants. Because this isn't so much a 'public board' as jeremy's virtual house. But I'm speaking of any *member* having a problem with another *member's* language - I think they should just deal.

-- Besides - such scanners are all stupid. We don't need to be talking about reading Herman Melville's Moby Richard because of some stupid software.

It wouldn't really matter to me since to tell you the truth, it really isn't a large issue to tell you the truth. Its very rare someone will have foul language or profanity that needs to be dealt with.

I think at this time it can easily be dealt with thru the report this post option if you find or feel offended by someone's language.

Regards.

Well....I agree with both the opinions....However, I'd like to say that it was just an idea....that had struck me.....in fact, I agree that it is the flexibility at LQ that makes it so good a place to express one's problems, one's own way..

As far as scanning the posts goes. if at all implemented, i think that will really slow down the process of making a post, by just scanning each and every single post...irrespective of the fact whether the post is improper or not....So its right on LQ's part to be a bit loose as far as censoring the replies goes...

amit

I'm sure some people are offended by foul language. But hey, they don't here it all the time at work or wherever anyway? They just ignore it there and I'm sure they can do so here too.

I'm not defending the use of such language on these forums. The occasional one just doesn't bother me. I understand when someone gets frustrated over computer problems. But if people use it to abuse others or all the time then the mods are always good to put a stop to it.

Like tickykid said, if a post is offensive (or rude) there is a "Report this post to moderator" link.

I agree......with digiot. Freedom of speach is a right, that means that if someone wants to hold up a sign that says F*** Bush it is his right. It really feel that once the first action prohibited, the first word cencered, you would take away the freedom of LQ and the mods do a good job. Please note the sig below!

I also totally agree with the First Amendment right here in the United States but you also have to take into consideration there is no democracy here on this site, it is privately owned and operated. If Jeremy doesn't want such words expressed here, then well he has the final decision.

True But I think that if Jermy had a problem with those words he would have done something by now a there really is not that much bad lang. on LQ! Search Dolphin (sp?) on about the 3rd page

There actually used to be a filter for some words. It was, at some point, removed. We have not had a problem since it was removed and as long as that trend continues I don't think a filter will be necessary. Thanks for the suggestion.
