search box on first index page

Since questions get asked over and over again maybe it would be a good idea to have a basic search box on the first page . This might encourage users to quickly enter a search instead of having to go to the search page.

Carrying this idea even further, maybe commonly asked questions could be inserted in the textarea of the box. Perhaps randomly picked, via javascipt, questions could be displayed. Then you could have the question automaticly cleared from the text box when they click in the text area.

Definately a good idea macewan - jeremy, could you not just put a quick search box below the control buttons on all the pages?

I added it the welcome back bar (we need a proper name for that thing). There is already a search the site and a search this forum on every forum page and a search this thread on every thread page.

True - looks good anyway jeremy. Don;t think I'm getting at you but I did the same thing on our Intranet and one of the complaints was that the search box kept clearing itself. I ended up just using (modified for your seaech box text):
Code:
if(this.value=='Search For...'){this.value=''}

Courtesy of Matir, we now have an official Firefox LQ Forums Search Engine plugin.
