Repeatedly get CAPTCHA challenged during simple response to question

Recently I was trying to answer a question for someone, and what seemed like several times, I had to go through a CAPTCHA.

What's going on?

Are you using LQ through tor or a VPN?

Neither tor or VPN should result in a captcha.

It was definitely multiple times, while connected directly to LQ. Virtually anytime I tried to add text to my response to a question, up popped a CAPTCHA.

As to my use of "several", when I make a statement, I try to allow for the differences in how some people use phrases. There are dictionaries which indicate that the meaning of "several" is merely "significantly more than two". Yet some people seem to have a specific number, or a specific range of numbers in mind, when they use the word "several". Sorry for any misunderstanding.

And this happens only on LQ? No other forum or website?
And your IP is not blacklisted by cloudflare or some such (hence me asking about tor/vpn)?
Very weird.

Very weird.
it's only on LQ, I'm not blacklisted, etc., etc., and on LQ so far only that once; hasn't happened since.
It was indeed very weird. Especially since there was some odd yellow background image for the CAPTCHA which I don't think I've ever seen before on any website, and didn't seem to fit with the design approach, so to speak for LQ, at all.

The more I think about it, some people who are trying to get folks to look at advertising are doing things that I feel are goofy and obnoxious, by playing with the z-index on web pages, conceptually placing a transparent panel in front of something else on a web page. I've seen some things happen which at first seem very strange from a perceptual standpoint. Like you're watching a video on a web page, and all of a sudden you get an error code and related "error" page, as if the original page you were using had not been found. It can take a moment, or one or two instances of something like that happening, before you realize, oh the advertisers tried to load a page in the midst of what you were doing, even though you didn't touch the web page, and the page they were trying to load and display couldn't be found, but the result appeared in an otherwise transparent panel in front of what you were watching.

I suppose it's not impossible that if the timing were exactly right, some strange coincidence could have ended up with two pages behind one another in front of me while I was trying to use LQ, and since it didn't involve an ad, maybe it wasn't obvious. As long as it doesn't happen again, I'm not going to concern myself much with it, especially since we know it wasn't something that LQ intended to do.

^ sounds like your browser is infested.
You should kill the current profile. Maybe start using something like noscript or uMatrix.

No infestation. I began using noscript quite a while ago. But it sounds like you might not be familiar with the scope of approaches that are used for Internet advertising. You should almost be glad if you're not. There are ways around ad. blocking, etc. I tend to wish that people who use their creativity for that would use it for something else.

Answer the captcha more slowly. Click all the pictures of something, wait 10 secs before the ok. Or answer the weird text more slowly. Otherwise some sites seem to think that you are a bot.

That also happens if you have your user agent set to something different than the browser that you are using.

So you haven't even tried to create a clean profile to see if the problem persists.
...
The addons I recommend have very little to do with adblocking and almost everything with javascript, which is also almost certainly how your pop-ups/captchas/overlays are created (and possibly getting installed into your browser profile).

Thanks for the thought, but this thread is about something that happened on LQ, which isn't supposed to exist at all, in the context described, WRT LQ. So it's not about learning to use CAPTCHA's. I have no problems using CAPTCHA's.

I appreciate if you are trying to help. But as I said, I was using noscript for quite some time. Given that, I'm naturally aware of what it does. I was speaking in general terms, because the approaches to which I was referring were mechanisms to get around various things, including adblocking. They include a collection of things which I didn't specifically list, because the problem does not persist, it happened while editing one post only on LQ, which is why, some time ago, I marked this thread as SOLVED.

Another member has commented on having to complete a captcha to post here. There is apparently something going on with this.

Have you only seen this type of CAPTCHA layout on LQ?
