Rename newly created threads

I don't know if this would be any way at all feasible, but I am still throwing it out there as a thought. I think an OP of a new thread should be allowed to rename the thread itself, just in case later on the title is too vague, and does not give enough information about what the thread is about. :jawa:

Why don't you make a poll here? :)

Jeebizz 08-28-2009 04:57 PM

A poll wouldn't really be any point. This was just a suggestion.

Maybe if a member has not posted a reply or solution to the thread. If the title is changed after four or ten posts I can picture the confusion and some of the threads may die without a solution. The best solution is to suggest to the OP to try and choose a better title for his next thread and it may get more views or more qualified posts.

I agree that the title should be changeable, at least before any other members have posted replies. There are other forums that allow you to change them, and I've never seen any real abuse or confusion from it. I don't expect the people here will suddenly start changing titles willy-nilly if it's allowed.

I once posted a question where I accidentally used the wrong name for the scripting language I needed help with. When I later noticed my mistake I was able to correct it in the post itself, but the title continued to show the wrong query. Nobody reading just the title could know what I was really asking about.

I didn't think of it at the time, but I suppose I could've reported it to the moderators and asked them to change it for me. I guess that's always an option.

10 years ago I have suggested what you're sayin' Jeebizz , but Jeremy said that 1 HOUR after the new thread has been submitted is enough to make changes.

I will try with one more suggestion and that's it.

There should be no time limit for the OP to change his/her thread title.

My newest suggestion is that, if we will have this option of course, to add a mark "Renamed" next to the thread title so that everybody is aware of the change in the title and so that moderators can easily see it and if necessary, take certain actions, for example if the thread title is changed in a way that it doesn't describe the content of the thread anymore. If you feel that is necessary, this could be approved by moderators before the thread is actually renamed.

IMO this should be the very basic option of any forum on the internet, simply because people do make mistakes and they will make mistakes in the future too.

So, please, don't take away people's right to correct their mistakes!

Thank you!

Alan

I wasn't aware that there was a time limit, or an option of changing your thread title yourself at all. I messed my title up not long ago, and immediately asked to have it changed thinking there was no way to do it. I've tried to do it before. It changes the title once you're viewing the thread (the title of the original POST, but not the THREAD).

IIRC, if you click Edit and then Go Advanced, you can in fact rename the thread, providing the post is the alleged thread-starter. I wasn't aware of a time limit, though.

Cheers

That's good to know. If there's a short window of time in which the thread title can be altered, I think that's generally good enough. After that it can be handled by the mods on a case-by-case basis.

It wouldn't have helped me when I needed it though. I didn't notice my mistake until I came back the next day.

I actually agree with this suggestion. I guess we should be able to modify the thread title in a specific time window and the other people should be aware of the change, the same way as you can see that a thread has been [SOLVED] then you should be able to see when a thread has been [RENAMED] or simply [R] for short.

I agree.
It's not too much trouble, anyways. As long as you're somewhat careful when writing the title, you won't really need to change it ... and when a mistake happens, you can just change it as soon as you post. Also, the last time I made a mistake in my thread title and asked to have it changed, it only took a minute or two. :)

Previously, you could indefinitely update the title of a thread, but after an hour only the post title would be updated. I've changed it so that the thread title and post title will be updated if edited within a week. After that, only the post title will be updated. Thanks for the feedback.
