Possible to change search timeout trigger?

The search timeout is kinda frustrating under the best of circumstances but it's particularly frustrating when I, e.g., search for a single-character word and a six-character word, am told I have to make both three characters or more, so I go back to do so, and hit enter and then am told I have to wait. Could searches that result in errors not have the timeout triggered so you can just go back, fix it, and re-search? Or would this open up a hole in what must be some kind of defense mechanism?

(OT: has the 'click here to find similar threads' button always required javascript? It would be good if it didn't - indeed, if nothing did.)
