It means you have read that message, or that your session has 'read' that message. It's similar to the down arrow in the blue box, it will take you to the first message not read by you, which should have a ? in it's belly
That shows what threads you've posted in, read, or are really active, depending on which icon. I just looked around and can't find the page that used to tell you what these icons all meant, but there was one that existed for a better explaination that I can give.
Wait, I'm an idiot. Just remembered that the envelopes are for noting what's been read et al, but the Tux's are for who's online. Wish I could find that page for ya, it's more helpful than my weak memory!
I remember what the icons mean (I think), but now I get it... So the tux in the forum's page is for what forum has unread messages... the tux beside this message is for who is online...
