Is that little logo something automatic? I searched for th eoption to put it in, but I couldn't find it. Uhm... maybe my distro is not well-known enough? Where di I specify my distro? When I checked the last time I saw that my tux comes with a question mark on iets belly while other have a clean tux.

-edit-: now I see I have a tux head in place of the logo, how do I put Debian there, and why the question mark?

-edit-: and after editing the tux head is gone again! Does this forum have a life of its own?

Have a look at my posts: #71 and #72, I give the instructions there. As I am on Debian, they should work for you.

And yes, you have to do a refresh of the page for the icon to come up after you post.

I see I am a little late to this party. I just discovered this when, after I posted from a public computer, I discovered that horrible, obnoxious flag on my post. Now I've been publicly humiliated!

Seriously, being able to turn it off is a good idea. Till then, I guess if I'm not on my own system I need to remember to switch the user agent. (Sadly, prefbar, which is available on the CD I use on public computers, only has Lynx and Netscape 6.2 for Linux options.)

Another idea is simply to apply the distro icon only to the original post on each thread. Even then I don't know that I would trust the icon I see to accurately reflect the distro the question is about. Certainly in my case, I would expect the correlation to be rather low between what the question is about and what system I am posting from.

(While I'm not just posting to test, this post is with prefbar's user agent set to Lynx. We'll see what happens!)

EDIT: Here's another idea to get info about what OS the OP's question is about. You could simply have fields (required?) for it when starting a thread. Perhaps you could then show that information along with "original poster" for each post of the OP.

EDIT2: If you can form a hypothesis about the system from the user agent string, you could fill in that info in the field(s) I just proposed with a request for the poster to change it if the question applies to a different system.

Thanks, for some reason it doesn't work yet, neither in IceWeasel, not in Opera (whcih is my default browser).

The User Agent string shows up as: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; U; Debian; en; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061208 Firefox/2.0.0 Opera 9.60

BTW, adding "Debian" to the User Agent string is all but trivial in Opera. You have to put the string "Debian" in the ISP setting on the about:config page. Just that string, no semicolon or anything else. As you can see "Debian;" is added to the parenthesed string.

Although I do like the feature of showing the distro and OS, I don't think it is logical to have it depend on the browser's user agent ID. I use 4 regular machines, and various browsers on each of them...

Now let's see if my string is recognized.

Exactly, or worse, one with a different distro. That'll really confuse everyone. Either way it won't be helpful at all in those *many cases*.

The same thing could be said currently for users who don't keep their "Distribution" string updated in their accounts (or only list their primary distribution while they use others). If anyone is making assumptions about the distribution in question by information displayed in the user's profile, they are taking a leap of faith in the first place.

While we're still evaluating whether to keep this feature, I have added the ability to completely disable it on a per-member bases. Simply go to http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...do=editoptions and set "Show User Agent in Posts" to "No". If we do decide to keep the feature, I'll work on adding additional distribution detection.

While I struggle to understand that you are applying this capability for a positive reason, I strongly disagree with websites that probe my system to determine what OS I'm using. Perhaps I'm just a little 'set in my ways' from past experiences with sites that done so for the sake of promoting the browser or OS of their choice.

Just for the record, we're not actively "probing" for any information. We're simply using data your browser pushes with each HTTP request.
