New Thread Button - I suggest changing the location of the new Thread button
 

I suggest you place the new thread button on a larger button that is higher and more visible - also have it available on every screen in Linux Questions .org

I think this is the wrong place for this thread. If you agree that 'Suggestions and feedback' would be a better place, the correct course of action would be to report your own thread and ask for a mod to move it.

OK - How do I do that?

You can click on the REPORT button, it's not bad it will alert a moderator that this thread is suggested to be moved. Likely a moderator will discover this soon anyways.

Well, on THIS particular screen where I'm reading a thread and now replying to it, I'd rather NOT have a NEW THREAD button. I'm not intentionally dumb, but who hasn't clicked by accident or started a click where the mouse shifts at the same time then you hit the wrong thing. Sort of no big deal, eh? But right now, I've typed stuff and until I click POST REPLY if I do something wrong, I'd be a little peeved at myself for having clicked the wrong button, especially if it undid the typing I'm doing right now. Short, heck even lengthy answers are well thought out, but many times live typed and thus if it gets erased ... you're losing my unvarnished genius and I'll have to replicate that. Every answer is original. Patent pending ...

I've created a whole 12 threads during my tenure here. Some of us ask a lot some of us answer a lot. I'm guessing I'm the latter.

Further to add to potential frustration, I noticed before I clicked "Post Quick Reply" that it also allows for ALT-S which I never use in spite of my typist over mouse tendencies. Yeah, if there were also a quick key sequence to accept New Thread, say it were ALT-T and I mixed those up. Same irritating result. Just my humble opinion, you like the idea, we just have different preferences.

Thanks for the feedback. We have no plans to add a New Thread button to every page of LQ, as the thread is tied to a particular forum (and the current workflow is fairly standard across the web and therefore well understood by new members).

Frustration
 

Hi, My main reason for posting this request is that it is very frustrating in many instances trying to create a post.

Usually I am coming into Linuxquestions.org as a result of a google search and the post is a HIT in google and is close to an answer I am looking for but I want to post a question in the forum that the answer comes up in.

The New Thread button is never on the screen where the Thread is in; and so I have to screw around trying to get to a screen that displays the New Thread button and by that time I am never in the forum that was related to the google search that took me into Linux questions in the first place. For example I want to create a post related to Sendmail and LDAP but can't find that forum. There at least be a New Thread button on the screen when I first login to Linuxquestions - which there is not. And even on the screens where the New Thread button does appear It certainly does not jump out at me.

Roll up a bit.

At the top of the screen is a set of hyperlinks showing the overall hierarchy leading to this thread, backing up to the forum it's on, backing further up to the total list of forums, and finally backing up to LQ.org top level. You can click anywhere in there and get zipped right to the level you want. I didn't think that the new thread was particular to each forum, but it is. Jeremy is 1000% right there.

I am saying the new thread button is not there.....

And this is by design. The number of members who would click on "New Thread" when intending to reply to an existing thread would far outweigh any benefits.

The forumjump on the bottom of every page means that no forum is ever more than a single click away from any LQ page. The New Thread button is always in the same place for those fora.

ya, that is another reason why I am saying it would be a good to move the new thread button. Does it not make sense to have that button under at least one of the menu items at the top of the screen or even as one of the menu items
